Background – Drawing on a long-standing interest in leadership, and following experience of working in leadership roles in the computer industry, I set up New Leadership in 1999. This enabled me to focus on developing and sharing my distinctive ‘relational’ approach to leadership (Associative Leadership).Leadership and leaders – I define leadership as a process of setting direction, aligning resources and organising implementation. I define a leader as anyone who has a role that includes responsibility for this type of process (e.g. for themselves, for a team, for an organisation).Experience – I have worked internationally, with a variety of individuals at various career stages, in organisations structured and led in a variety of ways, in various private, public and civil society settings.Developing the approach – The approach combines the relational aspects of contemporary leadership theory and practice, with the areas of psychology and neuroscience that focus on the quality and development of human relationships across the lifespan – in particular the Dynamic Maturation Model of attachment (DMM), and the Social Neuroscience of Human Attachment (SoNeAt).Sharing the approach – I share my distinctive approach through individual coaching, using a ‘toolkit’ of concepts and processes. As a pioneer in attachment-informed leadership and organisation design, I am also involved with developing research and training in this emerging field.
