Philosophical underpinning – The concept of ‘Self Leadership’ that I use in my work arises from a form of methodological existentialism that seeks to combine the neo-Socratic philosophical tradition with the focus of the existentialist philosophers on individual existence, authenticity, and the challenges of human life.Inside-out approach – My work with leaders takes an ‘inside-out’ approach where their capacity for Self Leadership (leader development) enhances their capacity to lead others (leadership development. I define Self Leadership as the integrated capacity for self-regulation and self-agency.Self-regulation – Creating a gap between stimulus and response, and placing in that gap, an awareness of our feelings, then an awareness of our thoughts, and then an awareness of a ‘self-agent’ response (feel deeply, think clearly, act wisely).Self-agency – An awareness of what is most important to us (about ourselves, others, and ‘the world’), over the short-term (personal organisation), medium-term (plans), and long-term (ethos).Enhanced metacognition – A capacity for Self Leadership enables enhanced metacognition. Enhanced metacognition increases a person’s overall cognitive and emotional flexibility and resilience. It also underpins a number of specific capacities including proactivity, creativity, innovation, problem-solving, contextual thinking, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making.

Attachment-informed approach – My organisation design coaching with leaders enables them to develop an attachment-informed understanding of organisation design including: leadership roles and types, accountability structures and functions, planning and review methods, meeting and decision methods.Enhanced leadership culture – An attachment-informed organisation design enables leaders with the capacity for ‘secure’ leadership relationships to develop a ‘secure-base safe-haven’ organisational culture. Such a culture, where people feel safe and seen, and supported, has been shown to make a significant contribution to enhancing the productivity and wellbeing of both the leader and those they lead.
