Our native iOS app is our flagship experience, and JZ came into a very challenging environment from all angles: we had significant staffing gaps, an aging non-modular entangled application architecture, and very aggressive business expectations. JZ rebooted the iOS team, recruiting and hiring in a ton of strong, fresh talent. He worked continuously to educate the broader set of business stakeholders on iOS platform accelerators and constraints. He overhauled team practices and docsets. And he successfully led the effort to modularize and modernize the codebase for our iOS app. Today, we’re in a position where the code base has been factored into a set of foundational modules (networking, user interaction tracking, AB testing & experimentation, and so on) and customer experience focused modules (home feed, search, property details, group collaboration & trip boards, booking, stay, and so on). This modular architecture, coupled to a monorepo structural layout for sources, has positioned us to manage our horizontal dependencies simply and effectively along with unblocking feature teams to iterate in their area of focus across our customer journey. Our feature delivery teams deal with minimal coupling and air-traffic collisions with other parallel feature delivery teams, automated test coverage has exploded in a good way, and the dev+test+debug+build cycle has shrunk drastically - also in wonderful ways.
