Ancora imparoSparked by Kennedy (1961), I found Schumacher (1973), Geertz (1973) and Said (1978). Rorty (1991) and Max-Neef (1991) kept me in line. I despaired over Fukuyama (1992) and Huntington (1995) even as I was comforted by Etzioni setting right social attitudes (1993), as Fukuyama bails out on his end of history thesis (2003... ongoing). I'm open to Crenshaw (2011) proposing open-ended investigations of overlapping and conflicting intersectionalities of race, gender, class, sexuality, nation, and other inequalities. Still, I learn... *Straddling multiple cultures personally and professionally, I am a builder. Where there are no bridges, I forge. With bridges fallen into disrepair, I appraise, remodel and make good. My purpose is to advance the sum of the parts of our common humanity. I am privileged, having lived and worked across cultures in multiracial Malaysia and now in multicultural Australia. Born, schooled and worked half my life as a journalist in Malaysia, I seek to advance my contribution to the vocation and peoples in our global village out of Melbourne. A natural extension is to expand my role to advocacy for diversity, equity and inclusion in media, at once mirror of community, society and the world and, increasingly, a catalyst of activism, not all of them noble.Reinforced by politics and culture of the Monash school, I am at once a student, coach and mentor of these disciplines. My professional experience could not have been more stark than roles at the New Straits Times Group in Kuala Lumpur and The Age in Melbourne. My guide posts since are ethics, my method, politics - of persuasion. Reach out. My first language is English. I retain a working proficiency of Bahasa Malaysia. 汉语拼音 Hànyǔ pīnyīn was my second major at Monash. I keep my hand in with daily practice on the smartphone.
