Hello! My name is Katie Garner and I'm a native Austinite who is passionate about making schools better for all kids. I believe education is a pathway to equity and equity is the pathway to education. I believe all students can perform at high-levels, and that 100% of kids deserve access to exemplary education. I am working toward transformation in education through as a director at TNTP, inc. My work focuses on supporting schools and districts to transform instructional outcomes, with a focus on math instruction.Previously I worked on the Teacher Incentive Allotment team with TEA. We are creating a realistic pathway for excellent teachers in Texas to make a 6-figure salary. We’re also creating a statewide movement of the best teachers to schools where kids need them the most (rural schools and schools with high levels of poverty). Before TEA, I worked to improve academic performance, develop highly effective teachers, and implement Restorative Practices as an assistant principal at KIPP Austin College Prep . I’m energized by finding better ways of “doing school” and I get tons of joy watching kids learn hard stuff. I also love watching teachers grow from novices into some of the highest-performing teachers in the district. Before I was an assistant principal, I was an elementary and middle school teacher. I began my journey teaching a self-contained 1st grade classroom in Del Valle ISD and later went on to teach 4th, 5th, and 6th grades math. One of the things I loved most about teaching was the flexibility I had to try new things and experiment until I found that magical intersection of joy and growth for kids.
