I work at the intersection of science and policy; technology and society; people and places and seasons of nature. Its what I've been interested in for decades. I’ve been at the National Academies leading studies and programs for the past 25+ years , working primarily on the first four of these – the rest of my life fills the others. I have extensive background in energy, climate, water, and environmental analysis and have lead 18 widely disseminated consensus studies reports. My recent activities involve technology, policy, and societal dimension's of accelerating decarbonization in the U.S., and how such a transition can meet multiple environmental goals and address far-ranging societal goals of equity, prosperity, and energy justice. I have published on a broad spectrum of issues related to climate change, ambient air quality management, ozone depletion, emissions trading, water resources, groundwater contaminant, and the history of climate, vehicle technologies, and natural resources management. My perspectives on labor and equity, society and technology have been shaped as much by being a cannery worker, gas station attendant, axle mounter, and waiter as being a field geologist, scholar, and senior staff director.
