I am an accountant within the Investment Trust Accounting team. I am responsible for the production of all management and financial accounts information for the assigned Investment Trust Clients. I prepare monthly net asset values and report these to the Association of Investment Companies. I also prepare monthly board papers for reporting to the various trusts boards. Preparation of year end and half year financial accounts is a predominant part of my role, with three clients currently this takes up half of the year between preparation and then liaising with the auditors.

I was a Service Accountant for Catering, Cleaning and Facilities Management and Building Services. Part of the role involves preparation and maintenance of the revenue budget, provision of effective financial monitoring information to relevant budget holders within the services and assisting in the completion of revenue monitoring reports to the relevant management teams and spending committee. Co-ordination of the closure of the accounts, and completion of appropriate sections of the final accounts as required. Completion of various government and statistical returns and performance indicators reports further to the closure of accounts and ongoing throughout the year.I also participate in the services planning process for the accounting team and the finance service and contribute regularly to the team’s performance measures. I am currently developing training within one of my services to ensure projections are more accurate and they are more aware of the financial impact of monitoring. I have a positive attitude to change and promote continuous review, improvement especially within new systems which are currently being implemented including a new finance system which is due to go live at the start of the year. I am responsible for the supervision of three accounting technicians and one administrative assistant, this involves developing staff skills and experience through the council’s employee development process.

Based within the Financial Advice and Support section I provided costing information to Research Academics for their research projects. This involved information finding and extraction to ensure that all the needs of the projects were met. Once appropriate costs were determined applications for funding were submitted with our assistance and further to funding being awarded, accounts were opened and monitored for the duration of the projects which could sometimes be for up to five years. Award conditions had to be checked regularly and adhered to in order that they were prepared for audit. Other aspects of the role included preparing monthly reports for Directors and the University Court, attending budget meetings with schools and units to provide ongoing analysis and allocating budgets accordingly and setting up accounts and cost centres on Aptos system as required.

Being the only Office Secretary within Environmental, Health & Safety Services working for 7 senior members of staff was demanding. My role included maintaining Unit accounts and providing a monthly update to the management team, processing purchase orders for equipment and materials required by the Occupational Health Adviser and budgeting throughout the year and for the following year.

Whilst working within the Staff Development unit of Human Resources I was responsible for organising the year's course programme of works. A large part of my role involved processing invoices and monitoring income and expenditure to ensure that we were within our budget. This could result in changes to the programme of works depending on the projected position.
