Banedanmark - Signalling Programme - Onboard

As OnBoard Project Manager I was responsible for the new Onboard Train Control System - which is to be installed in the entire rolling stock fleet in Denmark - fulfills the requirements to the ERTMS standard for ETCS onboard equipment. This includes the timely installation, test & commissioning and safety approval of the OnBoard train control system (ERTMS Level 2 Baseline 3) for a total of about 800 trains.In parallel I was working as Line Manager for app 15 engineers in the Banedanmark (Railnet Denmark) Technical Team being part of the signalling programme.I was reporting directly to the Programme Manager and the Programme Director of the Signalling Programme.The objective of the Signalling Programme is to replace all signalling on the entire Banedanmark railway network with ERTMS (European Railway Traffic Management System), which is a modern SW controlled, radio based signalling system, where line side signals are entirely replaced with in-cab signalling. Denmark will be the first country to carry out a country wide implementation of the standard European ERTMS Level 2 baseline 3 system. This envisages an investment of EUR 2.4 billion.

I was responsible for the integration of the complete GSM Engine Platform. Main focus was to identify and manage the different HW <-> SW interfaces and to efficiently enable and verify the different platform functionalities. This included the detailed coordination between SW, HW, product program, suppliers, pre/ mass production & customer care. Other important area was to drive task force & virtual teams across the organization to merge new subcomponents (HW & SW) into the project, while keeping the risk under control.Responsibilities:- Coordination of hardware and software deliveries to enable and validate Engine Platform functionalities according to internal & external stakeholder requirements.- Implementation of new subcomponents (HW & SW) into the project.- Align & implement test strategy & targets between R&D and production.- Manage cross functional task force & virtual teams.- Reporting status within the organization.- Value Stream Analysis - identify, plan & integrate technical & process optimizations.- Build & develop team and competence locally and in Nokia Beijing, China.Achievements:- Complete certified GSM/EDGE Engine Platform delivered to Nokia Beijing as scheduled. Used to productize multiple Nokia products (sold in 100+ million units).- Implementation of 1st Nokia-level dual path charging functionality in Nokia feature phone portfolio.- Test strategy/ coverage complying with “best in class” quality/ test-time targets achieved in Nokia mass production globally.- New cross functional integration plan delivered - used as backbone for future Engine platform developments in Nokia.- Prototype builds successfully executed meeting internal/ external stakeholder requirements.- Successful transfer of knowledge from Europe to China. Application notes and expert knowledge documented and handed over from the R&D development teams to the (remote) Maintenance Team in Beijing.- New system Integration team/ competences build up in Nokia Beijing.

As RF Coordinator, I was responsible for coordinating the RF activities between the external chipset developer, the Nokia RF team & the production. This specifically included orchestrating the SW support (firmware & DSP) to enable the RF verification activities. Moreover, strong support was given to obtain a reliable spec compliance matrix between the phone application performance (Nokia production test) and the chipset test limits. As a result, the ever best measured Nokia production yield was achieved.Responsibilities:- RF management plan.- Drive, align & communicate test strategy/ specification/ targets between R&D and Production Test Team to improve the capacity/ capability of the Nokia mass production.- Drive the spec compliance matrix between phone level performance and chipset test limits.- Clarify & coordinate SW deliverables to enable debug, test & validation activities across multiple R&D teams.- Build preparation and on-site build support in Nokia pre-production. Achievements:- Delivered 1st GSM Engine Platform developed by external chipset supplier.- Significant improvements of mass production efficiency. Low test time, high production yield & low field return achieved for Nokia mass production (100+ million units). Result used as backbone of future Engine platform developments in Nokia.- Design of Experiments (DOE) chipset test strategy – new Nokia standard for qualifying Nokia proprietary Chipset solutions as well as commercial offerings.- Common mindset and an aligned level of ambitions between R&D, product program, production team and suppliers regarding the pre-build deliveries, quality and milestones.- Managed thermal PWB analysis to comply with Nokia internal standard product requirements.- Coaching/ building up RF teams locally and in Nokia Beijing, China.

In my role as RF Team Leader I managed the RF activities towards a new chipset technology caused by a strategy to utilize a chipset developed by an external supplier. This project required the definition of a new work mode between Nokia R&D and the supplier. Due to the significant business impact, strong support was given to the supplier to secure deliveries fulfilling Nokia needs and standards.Responsibilities:- Adapting and change the Nokia RF activities according to new work-mode triggered by major organization change.- Support supplier to fully understand Nokia needs and standards. -Manage technical RF forum.Achievements:- Managed the RF-level planning & coordination activities of the 1st customized Low Cost GSM Engine Platform developed by external chipset supplier.- Wake-up of first GSM ASIC developed by external supplier.- Leading a technical forum counting 10+ engineers to expand knowledge and to improve, align & document Nokia internal development process.

As RF Design Engineer I was working to add significant additional functionality to existing Nokia GSM chipset according to: 1) Fill a gap in the roadmap for evolving market, 2) Extend the lifetime of existing chipset. This particularly included the development of new ceramic components and the optimizations of GSM L1 DSP SW. Responsibilities:- RF system calculations, design & verification of GSM/EDGE Engine Platform.- Manage the development of customized ceramic RF components.- Manage technical RF forum.Achievements:- Successful market introduction of new products based on the 1st Nokia-level quad band GSM Engine Platform including AMR & EDGE downlink functionality.- Developed & optimized test specification used in Nokia mass production (10+ million).- New Nokia specific ceramic components qualified for mass production at multiple international vendors (multi sourcing).- Leading a technical forum counting 10+ engineers to expand knowledge and to improve, align & document Nokia internal development process.

As RF Filter Engineer, I was responsible for the mechanical/ electrical design of GSM duplex filters suitable for in-house production. Responsibilities:- Design, test & verification of high power duplex filters for 2G network.- Design for Manufacturing & Design for Production Testing to comply with in-house production requirements.- Analyze tools to increase in-house production capacity.Achievements:- 1st Celwave-level design of new duplex filter based on simulations – CST Microwave Studio – shortening the time to market significantly.- Collecting requirements & specification for automated robot to run automated tuning of duplex filters based on a large number of highly interconnected processing elements (neural network).
