About Kaarissa Harring-Harris
Kaarissa Harring-Harris started her career in 2012 after graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Conservation and Wildlife Biology). She then completed her Honours thesis, titled “The importance of preserving peppermint trees (Agonis flexuosa) in developed sites and providing alternative rest sites for Western Ringtail Possums (Pseudocheirus occidentalis)”. This study investigated the link between Western Ringtail Possum behaviour and resource availability, contributing to the effective management and conservation of Western Ringtail Possum habitat. Her most recent accomplishment was the completion of her Masters of Science (Biological Science), titled: “Preventing bird declines in urban landscapes: Influence of behavioural traits and streetscape plantings”. The project analysed 20 years of bird surveys collected by citizen science programs within the Perth metropolitan area. Trends were calucated with Generlised Linear Models to explore changes in species presence over the 20 year period. The study aims to assist urban managment schemes by highlighting urban-adapted bird species and behvaioural guilds.Kaarissa previously worked as a Research Assistant with Edith Cowan University (ECU). This involved manual processing of data from Automatic Acoustic Recorder from tropical islands within the Federated States of Micronesia. She indetified the presence of target species based on call recordings. Kaarissa has also worked as a field ecologist for the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC), developing skills in field survey design and operations, science communication, behavioural ecology and reserve management in a variety of Australian sanctuaries (including Karakamia, Paruna, Mt Gibson, Faure Is, Newhaven & Wongalara). Her field work included monitoring Tammar Wallabies, Bettongs, Bandicoots, Western Quolls, Phascogales, Native Rodents and various reptiles and amphibians.
