Researched in the area of nuclear medicine and medical physics with advisor Kent Lambert, CHP (director for Radiation Safety for Hahnemann Hospital, St. Joe's Hospital). Abstract: Technetium-99m is used in a number of nuclear medicine applications, usually injected intravenously with an acid or other chemicals to aid with acceptance into the body. Technicians applying these injections are lightly shielded from the body of the syringe however an unknown amount of radiation still escapes from the base of the syringe. Technicians are exposed to this on a daily-basis, to both palm and fingers. Measurements were taken using thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) and gafchromic film on a paraffin hand to determine average dose in application of Tc-99m. Results were analyzed and found to be within the NRC limit for nuclear workers. In addition, TLDs were used to determine which parts of the hand were more exposed than others, leading to recommendations to shield certain parts of the hand more thoroughly. Theory, experimental process, and results were presented in a thesis defense to the Drexel University Department of Physics, and was followed by a question-answer session with members of the Drexel Physics Department faculty regarding experimental procedure, theory of experiment, and general nuclear physics knowledge.
