As the principal investigator of the "Examining Digital Exclusion Among Black Returning Citizens" project, I am responsible for designing all project materials (i.e., interview guide, training materials, etc.) and overseeing a team of seven undergraduate and graduate students. I also network with community-based stakeholders to identify organizations that are interested in referring clients for participation in the research study and handle participant recruitment and data collection. I also am responsible for analyzing and managing all project data.

In this role, I focus on organizing and planning recruitment initiatives aimed at students from historically underrepresented communities. I do this by connecting with administrators at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to schedule in-person and virtual events with students to discuss our graduate programs in the Michigan State School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) and advise them on how to prepare competitive applications. Additionally, I assist with internal inclusion and retention efforts by surveying current graduate students' perceptions of inclusion in SCJ and hosting townhalls for students to share any issues they would like handled by administrators. I also survey incoming first-year graduate students' skillsets to inform the professional development sessions we offer for students.

The Advance Peace (AP) program is a community violence intervention program that uses a trauma-informed, racial equity lens to target youth at the epicenter of gun violence. As the project manager for the Process Evaluation of Advance Peace Grant, I scheduled and conducted interviews with AP community advisory board members and neighborhood change agents as well as issuing payments for interview participation. I also ensured that participants' interview data was properly managed and stored.

As the instructor for the "Criminal Justice Research Methods" course, I independently facilitated a twice-weekly course for 36 students. In this role, I learned how to construct college-level research methods course and how to present technical topics to undergraduate students, and I designed the course with culturally-responsive pedagogy in mind. I also designed all course homework assignments and graded and provided feedback to students on their assignments.

For my project titled "Digital Literacy Among Justice-Involved Individuals," I served as the principal investigator and oversaw the project from conception to completion. Specifically, I developed and pilot-tested a mixed-method interview guide, led participant recruitment efforts, conducted informed consent and participant interviews, managed data collection and storage, conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses, and supervised an undergraduate research assistant. The "Getting It Right Program" is a community-based program that pairs men and women paroling out of prison in Wayne County, Michigan with mentors and a case manager to assist them with their transition from prison to community. As the project manager for this program evaluation study, I oversaw the project's participant recruitment and data collection efforts. I also maintained partnerships with the project's stakeholders (i.e., Michigan Department of Corrections and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries) to ensure that we obtained accurate data records for study participants. I conducted informed consent and interviews with participants and supervised a team of 3-5 undergraduate research assistants.

For my project titled "Women Facing the Board," I served as the principal investigator and oversaw the project from conception to completion. Specifically, I designed and conducted semi-structured interviews with women currently or recently on parole to understand their parole hearing experiences. I supervised an undergraduate research assistant as well and managed the project's $4,500 budget. This paper was inspired by my experience in the Inside-Out Program at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in 2019.

During my first year of graduate school, I served as a graduate research assistant in Dr. Merry Morash's "Effective Probation and Parole Supervision for Women and Men" study by contacting potential participants, reviewing consent and contact information forms, and conducting participant interviews. I also supported Dr. Steven Chermak's "The American School Shooting Study" project by conducting thorough research and compiling information from open sources on school shooting cases that occurred between 1990 and 2016, providing valuable insights and data for the study.

As a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow, I supported the work of the Committee on Law and Justice and Board on Children, Youth, and Families by contributing deliverables to their prosecution workshop, K-12 threat assessment workshop, and the effect of active shooter drills on K-12 students’ health and wellbeing consensus study. I also authored three concept papers focusing on the following topics: community violence intervention program street outreach workers’ workforce development, the National Institute of Health’s pediatric research portfolio and structure, and algorithmic technologies used in the criminal legal system. Additionally, I worked with the Office of Diversity to develop the second installment of their diversity, equity, and inclusion toolkit, which focused on how to incorporate lived experience into the National Academies’ consensus studies and workshops. Lastly, I worked on a team of five to draft a policy memo and workshop on housing equity and developed a reading list of resources on community-engaged methods and qualitative methods.

Specifically, I worked on the upcoming prosecution RFP and a bail reform memo. I also coordinated meetings with the Pretrial Research Advisory Board to get their input on upcoming projects. As a research assistant, I worked on a project examining the impact of direct and indirect police victimization experiences on Black women. My role was to transcribe participants' interviews and quality check other transcribers' work. I also assisted with study recruitment efforts by contacting organizations to post the study's flyer and coded the interview data using qualitative analytic approaches.

As a co-chair for the 42nd African American Heritage Festival's "Word on the Street" event, I collaborated with my co-chair and our subcommittee members to plan and execute a panel-style dialogue on topics relevant to the Black community (e.g., colorism and Pan-Africanism).This required me to contact guest speakers for event partnerships and design the event's atmosphere, stage design, lighting, room setup, and food menu. I also coordinated an event in partnership with the Ohio Union Activities Board, where two members of the Exonerated 5 were brought to campus. This event centered on wrongful conviction and empowering individuals to transcend beyond devastating events.

I participated in a 3 credit hour course that traced the evolution of cultural, religious, racial, and national identities in France and Morocco, focusing on the countries' shared histories. I also examined how the legacies of slavery, colonialism and immigration continue to shape both nations.

In this role, I logged letters sent from incarcerated individuals in Ohio's correctional institutions and their loved ones into our database and replied to the letters to address the author's needs. In my replies, I addressed any concerns the author's had and provided the relevant policy information to them when needed.

As a SROP internt, I collaborated with Dr. Steve Chermak to help input cases into The American School Shooting Study (TASSS) database. I also utilized TASSS' data to develop an independent research project focused on analyzing differences between fatal and non-fatal shootings and presented the research findings at MID-Sure. During this internship, I participated in professional development events and workshops, engaging in topics such as networking, resume and personal statement writing, and presentation development as well.
