At Girls Inc. of Alameda County we work to inspire young girls to be Strong, Smart and Bold! Working predominately in low-income and under-served communities we strive to provide students with access and opportunities to help them thrive in school. The program provides high quality after-school instruction that enrich girl's lives through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Girls read and write about inspiring women, movements that changed history and build a girl-only community that supports each other. Our program focuses on teaching K-3rd grade students as research shows it is a critical time for girls to learn how to read in order to be successful throughout their futures. I work as a Literacy Specialist, where I develop literacy curriculum for our program at 8 elementary schools in Oakland/San Leandro. The curriculum follows a balanced literacy approach to target the foundational skills young girls need in order to become successful readers. The program supports girls in reading comprehension, phonics and word work, fluency and vocabulary development. I train 20-30 staff in curriculum implementation, the foundations of literacy, administering and analyzing assessments, teaching and engagement strategies and small group instruction.
Oversaw program implementation of one school site with 90 girls in two different after school programs. Coached and trained 7 staff members in behavior and classroom management, lesson planning and facilitation, effectively communicating with families and the school community. Supervised daily operations and administrative duties in coordination with two schools after school programs.

The Oakland Unified School District hired me to lead monthly training sessions for many of their Afterschool program staff in facilitation skills, lesson planning and implementing literacy curriculum. The project started as a pilot with 15 school sites and expanded to 40 school sites the following year due to the success of the pilot. I create and facilitate interactive, hands-on training that provide line staff with concrete tools to use in the classroom to improve student engagement and increase student's literacy and language levels.

CalSAC works to support and advance the out-of-school time field by connecting professionals, enhancing competency and building community. Through the Adult Learning Cycle, I provide high-quality, equity driven professional development to a wide variety of afterschool and summer providers. I lead training sessions on youth development, equity and inclusion, curriculum planning, integrating Common Core State Standards, behavior guidance, motivating and coaching staff, social-emotional learning for 10-60 staff.
I was a founding teacher of the 4th grade at Achievement First Bushwick. I taught multiple subjects to a self-contained English Language Learner class. I worked collaboratively with grade level teachers to create curriculum that would engage and challenge our students. We maintained the highest standards for our students' achievement by routinely using data from assessments to create lesson plans, review and reteach material to mastery. The classroom culture supported students in having a strong character guided by a set of core values which emphasized teaching good decision-making skills. In my second year at the school, I moved back to 2nd grade. I have a passion for the age group. I was able to use what I learned about fourth grade standards and expectations to prioritize and better prepare my second grade students for third grade and beyond. I became well versed in the following curriculum: Balanced Literacy, Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading, and EnVisions Math.

I started my teaching career with Teach for America. P.S. 207 was my placement site. I worked as a self-contained English Language Learner (ELL) teacher. Over half my students were ELLs and a few were new to the country. The students and community were a wonderful place to start my career in education. I taught using a Balanced Literacy approach modeled after the work of Lucy Calkins out of Teacher's College at Columbia University. We also taught with Everyday Math and Scott Foresman Science and Social Studies Curriculum.
