I completed a thesis project in the Velayutham Lab titled "Adipose Tissue Dysfunction is Associated with Altered Gut Microbiota in Diabetic Mice". We are examining the effects of a physiologically relevant dose of blueberry on lipid storage and metabolism. We are also seeking to expand on the links between microbiota and adipose tissue health.

I worked as a member of the Brooks Lab in the Integrative Biology department. Our group is working to update existing nutritional standards of care for patients suffering traumatic brain injury (TBI). We are using an animal model to better understand the metabolic alterations that take place following TBI, and to make clear the mechanism by which lactate supplementation improves patient outcomes.

I worked with licensed RDs to provide nutritional services to Cal Athletics varsity teams. My responsibilities included managing product inventory, promoting a healthy diet, educating student-athletes about nutrition, and assisting with goal-oriented nutrition counseling. I oversaw the implementation of a new fueling station for student-athletes, as well as managed the program during a transition to a new program director.

I worked as a full time research assistant in the Molecular Medicine branch of the NIDDK. My lab group was studying links between myoglobin and metabolism in an animal model, and sought to understand how nitrates and myoglobin affect oxidative metabolism. I worked with animal models and animal tissue, and performed PCR, protein extraction and blotting, glucose and insulin tolerance tests, and hematocrit sampling.

Our project sought to understand how increasing access points for students to purchase school lunches impacts compliance with federal regulations as well as student food waste. I worked in conjunction with San Francisco Unified School District at middle and high schools to collect and analyze data.
