This project seeks to establish a local context for stays within a growing culture of rural refinement, and to determine methods and locations of production, as well as any regional stylistic characteristics. The primary source material for this project is drawn from local probate inventories and account books. Stays with strong local provenance, as well as stays from outside the geographic region of study were examined closely for dimensions, materials and construction methods.
