As part of that I manage Reverb, our team and initiative creating news content for younger Minnesotans. That includes overseeing social video strategy for TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Coached a team of three reporters and five to nine interns to find and cover breaking and trending news daily. Edited up to 10 stories daily. Analyzed metrics to build content strategy for daily news that attracted audiences and drove subscriptions. Envisioned and led change in team structure and processes to improve performance and satisfaction. Implemented organizational tools to help team track storylines and produce enterprise and follow-up stories. Recruited, interviewed, onboarded and trained interns three times a year. Managed weekly “Faces of Arizona” series highlighting diverse communities.

Launched, hosted, and drove editorial vision for “Valley 101” podcast, an audience-engagement product driven by reader questions. Coached two early-career journalists in longform reporting and writing. Mastered Adobe Audition and taught team audio production. Wrote onboarding and development plan for a new hire. Managers saw my success as an ASU reporter and asked me to expand my type of reporting to the whole Valley. I wrote about issues affecting young and/or underrepresented communities and covered live events and breaking news ranging from protests, wildfires and shootings to festivals, parties and pageants. I was a newsroom leader in social-media reporting and audience growth. In addition to my work as a reporter, in 2016 I became an Arizona Storytellers Project emcee and storytelling coach, which I continued until I left The Republic, and in 2017 launched The Republic’s first podcasts, “The Gaggle” and “The Wall: Reporting on the Border.”

I covered student life and trends at and around Arizona State University. To my memory this was the newsroom's first digital-first reporting role, and I defined it by focusing on stories and story formats that drew younger audiences on mobile and social platforms. I used metrics to inform content decisions, and began to excel at identifying stories that would perform in SEO and social spaces.

I covered the City of Glendale, focusing on growth and development, community trends, government accountability. I also covered breaking news on weekends. My time in the role was short because Gannett's "Newsroom of the Future" initiative in late 2014 required all employees to seek new positions.

I primarily wrote events-preview stories for the Things to Do section, covering festivals, comedy, athletic events, musicians, museums and more. Roughly once a quarter I wrote long-form stories for the A and B sections about the people and places that make metro Phoenix interesting.

I managed the dining, events, food and home pages on our website as part of the online-production team for the features department. That entailed publishing articles, developing projects with the Food & Drink team, optimizing online traffic and more. For six months I was the sole producer for all Things to Do channels on Sundays.

I spent half my time producing online content such as slideshows, click-throughs and articles for azcentral.com, and the other half writing stories ranging from a one-day-turnaround piece for A1 to depth profiles covering art, events and trends with style and voice. I worked full time starting in May 2012.

I reported an array of stories for PHOENIX magazine, including ones on tattoo removal at a local homeless shelter, the Valley legacy that is John C. Lincoln, and superstar farmer Bob McClendon's organic farm at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. I wrote the June 2012 cover story on summer getaways, for which I traveled to three cities in northern Arizona and reported on dining, nightlife, sightseeing and more.

Worked with two other editors to manage and foster growth for a staff of about 15 student journalists, involving weekly pitch meetings, development of digital content and platforms, daily social media outreach on Facebook and Twitter, and editing and distribution of two print magazines.
