About Kailey Johnson
Hi there! My name is Kailey and I am a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Washington. I have had many different experiences throughout my life that have shaped me as an individual and given me many opportunities to learn and grow. I grew up in Kennewick, Washington and did several things there to leave a positive impact on my community. I spent seven years in band programs and held several leadership positions during my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. My most prominent leadership role within the band program was being the Drum Major of the marching band, a position that I held for three years. Additionally, I have had a lifetime passion of serving individuals with disabilities. This interest began as a fifth grader when I had the opportunity to read picture books to students in the special education classroom. Now, I have spent four summers working with the Partners N Pals Summer Camp through the Arc of Tri-Cities to give kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities in my home community a fun summer experience. Two of those years were spent as a volunteer, where I worked to keep my group of assigned kids safe and make sure they always had fun at camp. During the summers of 2022 and 2023, I was hired as a Camp Assistant, a leadership position where I worked to run Partners N Pals. This job entailed both office work before and after camp each day and overseeing drivers, staff, volunteers, and campers constantly during the camp day. In college, I have found exciting opportunities in my new home of Seattle, Washington. As a freshman, I was awarded a scholarship through the Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium. I became the Vice President of S.P.A.C.E. (Students Pursuing Academic and Celestial Exploration), the Registered Student Organization associated with Space Grant. As a sophomore, I am now serving as the President of S.P.A.C.E. I am also currently working at HUB Games at the University of Washington gaining experience in customer service and mechanics. After two quarters of employment, I have been promoted to Student Manager and feel inspired to expand my skills and abilities in this new position.I will be interning at McKinstry this summer and am beyond excited to gain new knowledge and learn engineering through real life applications.Recently, I also joined the Structures Team with the E-Truck Challenge to apply and expand upon the engineering skills that I am learning in the classroom.I am always open to learning new things and seeing where an opportunity can take me. Thank you for your time!
