About Kain Gardner

Kain brings 20 years’ experience in the public and private strategic land management sector across a broad range of areas including policy, planning, community engagement and project management. Kain is a very highly regarded trails consultant and has a strong interest in the provision of sustainable trails and recreational opportunities in natural areas. Kain has a long history delivering the full suite of trail related products and projects across Australia. He has conducted detailed trail feasibility studies and concept plans, trail planning and design reports, trail audits and condition assessments, sign planning and managed multiple permit and construction processes.His most recognised area of expertise is in the field of Trail planning and design. Kain has been involved in MTB and walking trail planning for 20 years and lead the development of MTB access in South Australia’s National Parks system. Kain is responsible for designing numerous successful MTB trail networks in his previous roles with National Parks SA and lead consultant with TrailScapes Pty Ltd. As a keen mountain biker, he is very much in touch with the MTB community, passionate about trails and the positive impact they can have on communities. His long history in the public and private trail sector means he understands the issues and opportunities that providing, managing and maintaining trails in natural areas presents land managers. He has acquired and developed a wealth of knowledge in innovative design and construction solutions for trails and visitor facilities in peri-urban and remote regional areas. Kain understands the range of elements that trails and infrastructure must both withstand and compliment to provide safe and memorable trail experiences. Kain started Open Trails Australia (OTA) to provide quality, unbiased and independent trail consultancy services. OTA works with tourism destination experts, landscape architects, trail construction companies and land managers. Clients appreciate his willingness and ability to ensure that the work and advice he provides meets the desired outcomes of the project. He ensures that the scope of work is suitable to deliver what the client really needs.
