Other duties include mentorship, crew management, technical skill instruction, career coaching, hand tool maintenance including sharpening and rehanging, axe training, risk management, project management, social media management, chainsaw maintenance, community management, facilities maintenance, group development, and leadership development.

A Crew Leader’s term of service has two distinct pieces: leadership development and leading their own crew. During the Leadership Development Program the Crew Leaders operate as their own crew. They learn and grow individually, produce strong bonds, develop running jokes and create high expectations for quality work. Midway through the spring they are paired with a co-leader and practice these new skills leading their peer group on various projects. During this time they gain valuable skills to prepare for leading and training their own crew.By the end of May the Crew Leaders begin their field season and start mentoring the members of their own crew. Whether it’s clearing downed trees with a chainsaw, building a new trail in the deep wilderness, or restoring sage grouse habitat on the eastern plains; crews complete projects of all sorts in every type of Western landscape. Although our participants spend most of their time outside and living in a tent, they will get involved in their local communities by finding volunteer opportunities and attending public meetings. Joining MCC is not a job – it’s a serious commitment to service and an opportunity to immerse oneself in a diverse experience.

Restoration activities included monitoring to identify user-created routes and GPS tracking, placing physical barriers, raking or disguising vehicle tracks, mulching impacted areas with native materials, and, where appropriate, planting native vegetation or seed to restore areas to natural conditions. This project is intended to reduce impacts to soils, vegetation, and water quality, as well as protect other resource values such as wildlife habitat, sensitive plants, heritage resources, and visual quality. Restoration work will be completed by hand using conventional hand tools. The restoration areas will be monitored for the effectiveness of restoration measures. CSNC and ENF staff also developed documentation protocols for sites needing extensive restoration in the future. Documentation at these restoration sites will consist of GPS location, photo documentation, listing of observable impacts and presence of observable sensitive resources, initial mapping of the site, and suggested restoration measures.Stewardship Assistant part of the position included Website management using WordPress, helping with Volunteer Recruitment using Facebook, Volunteermatch, Instagram, twitter, website, and Mail Chimp and press releases. It also included volunteer management, outreach, event planning, social media management, and fundraising.
