About Kaitlyn Bartlett
I am passionate about the fabrication and fitting of prostheses and orthoses, starting when my father fell ill to a near fatal case of viral pneumonia and needed an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) after spending one month on a ventilator. As I watched his foot drop severely impede upon his active lifestyle, I became fascinated with the concept of designing a device that could improve his ankle's range of motion. My father described his experience being fit for a custom AFO with a Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO): how the clinician worked with him to ensure he got the most suitable brace for his needs and maximized comfort by adding pads to relieve pressure. I seek to interact with patients in this way, and I love the artistic component of both modifying and designing devices. My career goal is to become a CPO and make long-lasting, positive impacts on patients' lives, just like the clinician did for my father. Over the past two years, I have immersed myself in the O&P field. I have worked directly with clinicians in device modification, shadowed numerous patient-clincian interactions, and learned valuable technical skills including the fabrication process for a definitive prostheses as well as a test socket. I have used CAD software such as Shapr3D to modify scans of residual limbs and then 3D printed them for test socket fittings. Currently, I am seeking opportunities in the O&P field that will expand upon my knowledge of patient care and will allow me to gain hands-on experience in device design and research, particularly with 3D printing and modeling.

In this role, I surgically extracted tendons from mice to study mechanical impingement as a causative factor of Achilles tendinopathy. I conducted TUNEL staining and image analysis utilizing MATLAB to determine rate of apoptosis in tendon cells.

In this role, I worked primarily in modifying devices. Specifically, I fabricated prosthetic check sockets through pouring plaster into mold of patient's residual limb, heating plastic and wrapping it around the mold, cutting off the plastic utilizing a castsaw, and then smoothing the edges to ensure patient comfort.
