About Kai Turner

Open for internships or casual work! Please visit my website: kturner.techI'm a mechatronic engineering and computer science student at UNSW, currently working casually at Kaz Robotics. I have skills and great passion for Computer-Aided Design, all forms of engineering, and robotics. I was formerly the mechanical design lead in Team 3132, an internationally competitive robotics team that recently came 3rd in the world. My most recent project was an MV and robotics enabled drone for the inspection and maintenance of high-voltage powerlines which won me a number of awards including 1st in the world in the category of robotics and intelligent machines at ISEF 2023. My other passions are Baseball, Hapkido, and the Trumpet, all of which I have pursued for more than 8 years.

Worked casually as a junior engineer at Codex where research is being undertaken to develop bio-technological systems that mimic the conditions of the human body to more effectively and efficiently cultivate cells. Performing CAD/CAM work for both product design and to design the injection moulds for manufacture and injection moulding in-house. I handled the entire CAD to part workflow, from designing, to making technical drawings and finally machining the parts. Additionally, I operated the CNC mill manufacturing the moulds as well as other smaller tasks ranging from product design to automation.
  • Macquarie University
First Robotics Competition - Lead Student
    Macquarie University Mar 2017 - Mar 2023
Macquarie Park, New South Wales, Australia
I was, for 2 years, the Lead Mechanical Design Student and Driver of the robotics team "Team 3132". I worked closely with industry experts and other passionate students to design robots from scratch which compete by completing often complex tasks and games in international tournaments. Previously, the robots I have worked on have come 2nd in Australia twice, First once, and 3rd Internationally (Out of over >5000 teams) once. I also have experience in machining and manufacturing as I fabricate and assemble a portion of the parts for my team as well. Here's a description of the competition from FIRST:The FIRST® Robotics Competition is the flagship competition of FIRST. A large-scale robotics competition, FIRST® Robotics Competition brings together students and mentors to build robots that perform in a competitive but gracious environment against teams from all over the world. In order to build the robot during the short build season, teams have to design and build mechanical, electrical and software controls systems, as well as integrate them all into one remote-controlled machine. Students have the opportunity to learn engineering skills across several disciplines, whether theyre interested in shaping and assembling metal, working with electronics, programming controls systems in Java, C++ or National Instruments LabVIEW, wiring up robots, designing innovative mechanisms, or creating complex autonomous programs to autonomously aim, drive and shoot.Every year, around March, FIRST® Robotics Competition regional competitions are run. Teams from all over the world travel to regionals to compete and earn their way to the World Championship event. Each regional has 24-60 teams competing in the robot game and presenting their outreach to judges. Held in April, the FIRST Championships bring hundreds of FRC teams together to play the game with and against each other.Source: https://firstaustralia.org/programs/first-robotics-competition/
