APEX Accelerator (formerly PTAC) for Southwest Michigan is a government funded, free service, non-profit agency required by Congress. In this role, I am fortunate to assist businesses in southwest Michigan work toward their government contracting goals. We teach clients to contract with the federal, state, and local government at no cost. We are funded by the federal government, the state government, and a local host (W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research). We offer classes to our clients and step-by-step guidance for a complex procurement system.These are some of the services we offer:• Orientation class, which I typically teach: This covers the basics of working with PTAC as well as the government.• BCC (Bid match, code, capabilities review): We sit down with each client and review their new bid matching, begin tweaking it, and go over any codes or capabilities as well as any registrations that should be completed. • Marketing and Research class which provides instruction to find your competitors and the agencies that are buying your product or service. It also covers creating your marketing materials for government contracting.• Assistance to clients at our office, their office, online with GoToMeeting, or with e-mail and phone calls to answer any questions or to help with registrations or proposal review, and more.

As a technical writer for Consona, I wrote software instructions in Flare by MadCap and produced both PDF instructions and online help. The developers write the basic instructions for each feature, and I format it both visually and grammatically for the end user. The help provides screen-level instruction as well as step-by-step process instruction.

This was a part-time job on the weekends and evenings. I discussed books with a variety of people, organized books, helped people find books, and worked at checkout. It was an environment with excellent co-workers, the ability to provide top-notch customer service, and an opportunity to sell a product I believe in 100%.

This was a home based work opportunity for formatting books to print at the press. This work increased my knowledge of Microsoft Word and reinforced my grammar skills. I had the opportunity to work with authors to prepare their manuscripts for publication.

As a Technical Writer for Manatron, I wrote help for several projects. I learned how to hand code HTML, CSS, and XML. I used RoboHelp to write online and PDF versions of help. I updated documentation as needed per the project needs, documented all work in a Microsoft Access database, and worked with developers and product specialists to provide the best instructions to the end user. I also updated the corporate intranet as needed and participated in the Fun Committee to bring entertainment to the employees and raise funds for local charities.

This was a part-time clerical assistant/receptionist position. It involved a answering a multi-line phone system, typing auto insurance forms on demand, and filing paperwork. I also answered client questions, prepared monthly reports, and assisted the sales personnel in keeping the office organized and efficient.

This was my first job, and it lasted 7 years. I enjoyed the work, the people, and the environment. This is where I learned how to work with office politics, varying schedules, and the importance of customer service. I began this work shelving books. I worked up to assisting patrons with seeking out and checking out library materials, adding items to the collection, and repairing books. This was an excellent learning opportunity, and I would recommend it to any high school student.
