Designer Data team: Build and manage backend systems related to Webflow’s main product, the “Designer”Database Sharding: Ported Webflow’s largest database table to shards. Refactored the initial proof-of-concept code for production, and extended it to be generalizable to other tables and actions (backup, restore). Architected a system for immediate data validation at migration time. Wrote end-to-end tests for the complex multi-step process, which surfaced a number of otherwise hard-to-diagnose errors that would have led to lost client data.

Business Networks: Single-handedly unlocked the next level of growth for Wave. Proposed, designed, built, and launched a new domain model for related businesses. The flexibility of the model allowed Wave to create customized solutions for highly visible clients with millions of daily users, such as the public bus system in Dakar and Shell gas stations across the country. It also allowed us to onboard new clients in days rather than months.Checkout API: Enabled an entirely new revenue channel for Wave, with over 3 million users to date and a weekly gross volume of 250 million CFA (local currency). Built the base infrastructure to allow businesses to integrate Wave payments into clients’ web-based checkout flows. Took initiative to create a fake ecommerce site to demonstrate the feature to non-technical audiences.Automatic Settlements: Enabled expansion of automatic settlements to new countries. Re-architected the system so that any business in any operating country could easily receive automatic wire transfers. Reduced the Compliance Team’s manual labor by multiple hours per day by improving their tooling and creating a better audit trail.Seed Data: Increased engineering productivity by refactoring the complex script that seeded developer’s local databases. Re-architected how time was handled in the script so that engineers could easily reason about time-sensitive actions such as transferring money between accounts.Team Processes: Spearheaded initiatives to improve project management and tech debt. Proposed, prototyped, and introduced project management software to the team’s process. Led a tech debt identification and ranking process so that it could be prioritized against other work.Company Culture: LGBTQIA+ advocate in a company that operates in many countries with anti-gay laws. Created and moderated a private online community for queer Wavers. Advocated for and got a section about LGBTQ safety added to company travel policies.

API Platform team: Developed intuitive, efficient APIs for product developers. EtsyGQL: Brought Etsy’s initial GraphQL integration from alpha to production. Streamlined the client side of the framework to ensure ease of use and good DevEx. Wrote extensive documentation, both static and interactive, which was consistently described as :chefs-kiss:. Developed and presented a well-received workshop on the framework. GQL reboot: Surfaced concerns to management about the limitations of the EtsyGQL server, which led to the team completely rewriting the server and schema using industry best practices and ApolloGQL. Developed & launched the first feature using the new GQL server & schema. Became project lead on GQL schema & integrations with product teams. Consulted on other teams’ integration efforts. Developed and presented a workshop about writing schemas with best practices.

Various product teams (e.g. Listing Page and Signals & Nudges): Built full-stack web products for the marketplace.“Your Favorites On Sale” notifications: Added millions in revenue with a new feature that alerted users when their favorite items were on sale. Developed an ETL workflow to process hundreds of millions of notifications daily. Nerd-sniped about half of Etsy’s engineers, gave a talk about it, realized I wanted to be in backend dev.“The Nudger” framework: Made experimentation easy and intuitive for product managers working with nudges (e.g. “only 1 left!”) to buyers. Innovated a framework in which the most relevant nudge would be shown to each buyer, often leading to multi-million annualized revenue gains per experiment.“Listing Card” tech debt: Unblocked experimentation on the Listing Card, Etsy’s most commonly used view for listing data, by systematically refactoring a decade of tech debt that invalidated experimentation data. Added hundreds of tests, using TDD to add stability to this fragile section of the codebase. Became the leading expert on the Listing Card and consulted on other teams’ experiments.
