I was brought in to streamline workflows & data management for the geochemistry lab. Laboratory projects totaled $5.1 million, were global in scope, and were performed for a consortium of 70 industrial clients. I performed scientific computing for the group, including:- Database design & implementation- Designing a custom R program to synthesize raw data from an analytical instrument for a proprietary analysis method. This program produced summary data & graphics from thousands of raw data points for each sample analyzed.- Automating data processing for sample intake, labeling, & data reporting- Performing statistical analysis including linear regressions & cluster analysis- Producing graphs, charts, maps, and other data visualizations for presentations & reports

My primary function in this role was to maintain & operate 4 Picarro stable isotope analysis instruments, including data management for the data intensive machine outputs. To this end, I developed custom R programs that automated the processes of:- Reformatting the machine output- Running quality-checking algorithms- Flagging quality assurance problems- Calibrating sample data based on known standard sample values- Inputting the final data into a sample database- Generating reports with the numeric data as well as graphs for easy data interpretation

Managed activities for the headquarters laboratory of the terrestrial ecology team in support of planning for a 30 year, $450 million national project, including:- Contributing significantly to writing 8 SOPs for lab & field protocols which will be utilized by hundreds of technicians in long-term operations at 60 sites across the U.S.- Supervising 3 technicians & 1 contractor- Creating & maintaining contractor work agreements- Performing statistical analyses including cluster analysis & linear regression- Designing & maintaining a database (tens of thousands of records)- Maintaining compliance for a USDA soils permit by maintaining equipment & sample storage conditions, SOPs, training materials & logs, and coordinating inspections- Creating educational outreach materials for public & k-12 outreach- Training technicians on field & laboratory protocols- Inventorying & maintaining equipment

I was hired to complete a summer project to prototype sampling procedures & initiate the development of a DNA sequence library for beetle & mosquito specimens at 4 project sites in Colorado. This included:- Developing sampling designs- Collaborating with the various stakeholders at the sites, including private landowners, university employees, and the US Forest Service- Ordering supplies, constructing, installing & checking traps weekly- Arranging a contract for mosquito trapping & identification

Through science and technology tutoring sessions with elementary school students, I tested and provided feedback on interactive tutoring software that employed voice recognition technology and customized tutoring session to student responses.

Lab work including preparation of samples for nitrogen stable isotope analysis, KCL and K2SO4 extractions on soils, chloroform fumigation for measurement of microbial biomass.Field work at long term study plots in Ft. Myer, Florida including nitrogen tracer injections & soil sample collection.

Supervised 3 sections totaling 42 undergraduate students who wrote and taught science lessons to approximately 900 elementary school students, also graded weekly lesson plans, and maintained records for student attendance and grades.

Field work including plot maintenance, seed collection, and species identification of vegetation in long term research plots. Lab work including water quality tests, data entry, and quality checking.
