Regenerative Medicine Project at DEKA: In addition to my Test Engineer responsibilities, I also work on a regenerative medicine project developing and running tests for 3D printing human tissue.

I worked in an Orthopaedic and Developmental Biomechanics Laboratory at Boston University studying fracture healing on a murine model. Generally, your bones are impressively proficient at dealing with stresses, strains, and even breaks. The regenerative capabilities of bone are amazing.Generally.Sometimes the bone heals, but it isn't aligned, leading to impairment or loss of function. Other times, the bone doesn't heal at all. Roughly one in ten fractures will result in a malunion or nonunion, respectively.What if you could "force" the bones to heal properly? Our lab is working to quantify the mechanical microenvironment in a healing fracture with the hope of using mechanical stimuli to treat the 10%.
