SLU is one of the World’s leading universities in agriculture and forestry research working in direct collaboration with industry. During this time I participated in the range of bigger and smaller cross-border projects such as Forest Refine and INFRES. Some of my work duties and achievements were:• Providing productivity analyses of chain flail debarker for separating extractive rich biomass from stem wood for biorefinery processes in Finland. • Stump fuel quality and productivity analyses of large crushers at terminals in co-operation with the Swedish company Skellefteå Kraft. • Initiated implementation of GPS Timber tracking system at a wood yard of the Swedish company Domsjö Fiber.

My role at SLU was conducting forest inventories before and after thinning operation, performing machine productivity studies in young forest stand and short rotation energy plantations within Forest Power project.

“Silava” is a leading forest research institute in Latvia focusing on wide range of forestry related areas. My role at “Silava” was to conduct field work and data analyses for management of fast growing energy crops as reed canary grass and willows. Additionally work involved evaluation of naturally afforested farmlands and developing pre-conditions of economically and environmentally feasible management of these areas.

My services included:• Forest tending, tree planting and soil sampling.• Data collection for economic feasibility analyses of manual pre-commercial thinnings of abundant agricultural lands.• Elaboration of above ground biomass expansion factors for small trees later utilized decision support tool for management of abundant and afforested farmlands.
