I am currently a registered nurse at Duke University Hospital on the General Surgery and Trauma Stepdown unit. Per shift, I care for 3-4 pre-operative and/or post-operative patients who have undergone various abdominal and vascular surgeries, in addition to trauma patients. Occasionally, we also care for off-service patients on the GYN/ONC, General Medicine, Endocrine, and ENT services. In caring for these populations, I have mastered specialized nursing skills such as the following: blood product administration, tracheostomy care and maintenance, wound/ostomy care, management of various thoracic/abdominal drains (i.e. chest tubes, abscess catheters, percutaneous biliary drains), pain management devices (PCAs, epidurals, nimbus pumps), Foley and NGT insertion, maintenance, and removals, cardiac monitoring, TPN and enteral nutrition, and management of orthopedic collars and braces. Throughout my three years on this unit, I have developed various skills such as critical thinking in a fast-paced environment, time management, working professionally with other members of the interdisciplinary team, and prioritization. Along with working in the role of primary RN, I have functioned as a charge RN and preceptor to nursing students and new graduate RNs for two years.
