Contract: Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel• 4-month secondment (Nov 2020 to Feb 2021 and Oct 2021 to Nov 2021) at the Contractor’s request to find out better solutions (lesser resource or shorter construction time) to different difficulties/changes faced on site so as to reduce the defined delays from a year to six months.• Established segment lifting plans for six viaducts (single-cell box girder with a span length of around 50m) and reviewed bridge construction schedule and its pursuit activities, e.g., falsework erection & excavation work.• Collaborated with other engineers on prioritizing the movement of lifting appliances, segments delivery and other concurrent construction activities for the erection of six viaducts throughout the site.• Created temporary works designs and method statements, and liaised with construction teams to speed up the progress for adherence to deadlines and quality standards, e.g., formwork early strike and road diversion.

Contract: Organic Waste Treatment Facilities Phase 2• Worked as Site Design Engineer to lead three structural engineers (from the sub-contractor) in carrying out the detailed design submission for two industrial factories in order to obtain construction consents from the Independent Consultant (IC) and the Engineer’s Representative (ER) under a tight schedule (within 4-month).• Interacted effectively with architects, E&M engineers and site engineers to correct the defined delays by means of redistributing human resources and reorganizing detailed design processes.• Piloted a new documentation registration system of engineering reports, drawings and method statements for the construction needs and design changes submissions.• Resolved design discrepancies e.g., floor openings & construction details, by coordinating and communicating with other professionals with the use of Building Information Management (BIM) model in a 4D environment.

Contract: Boardwalk underneath Island Eastern Corridor • Development of a 2.2 km long with 10 m wide steel bridge underneath an existing expressway for community enhancement purposes. As one of the design engineers, I conducted a scheme comparison of different bridge forms in terms of construction & maintenance difficulties, cost and visual impact.• Used MIDAS to carry out a preliminary design for the steel-concrete composite structure and SAP2000 to design associated connection details ensuring the stakeholders’ concerns were satisfied.• Contributed to the procurement process, wrote technical specifications and prepared blueprints for a tender invitation under NEC4 Option C, which affirmed my understanding of the project initiating process.• Participated in the progress meetings with the Client and interfaced parties ensuring the project tasks were completed on schedule and budget, in which, I developed my communication skills and working relations.

Contract: District Cooling System (DCS) at Kai Tak Development – Water Pipe Laying Works• Installation of two 1000mm diameter and one 500mm diameter pre-insulated steel pipes distributing cooling capacity in the form of chilled water from a central plant to multiple buildings. Responsible for supervising the Contractor’s work and handling changes throughout the site under the guidance of the PM’s representative.• Although the project faced a material shortage and health challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I coordinated the design with the Contractor’s resources to develop proposals and minimize risks and delays.• Planned, reviewed and innovated the pipe laying works throughout the site by means of proposing a traceable record to allocate any lapsed cable connection and reducing humidity to improve PU insulation performance.• Throughout inspection and communication, I was able to propose an alternative valve chamber design to the project with a cost saving of CA$ 32K and a faster construction period (provided a float time of 30-day).

Contract: Central Kowloon Route – Yau Ma Tei East• Conducted structural conditions analysis to the residential buildings, which were built 50 years ago, adjacent to the proposed tunnel• Reviewed a temporary traffic deck design and revised its construction drawings

Contract: Public Rental Housing Development at Pak Tin Phase 11• Acted as a structural engineer for a real estate development, which comprised two domestic blocks including 32 residential floors and a 3-story commercial podium. I designed and reviewed R.C. elements with the use of software: ETABS and SAFE to carry out numerical modelling for construction.• By being an active part of the project, I responded to the Contractor’s queries such as R.C. detailing and missing information and highlighted any design change in order to resolve design conflicts.• Estimated concrete and steel quantities and assisted in the project throughout the BEAM Plus sustainability assessment (applied to new buildings in HK) at the Client’s request.• Trained three graduates to produce detailed designs and blueprints in compliance with the codes. I also took a lead role in superstructure plans submissions to obtain design approvals.

Contract: Improvement of Christian Zheng Sheng Ha Keng Centre, Lantau, N.T.• Development of a campus located outlying island, which consisted of three low-rise buildings (cross floor area 2,100 m2). It was my first time being participated in the project processes from initiating to executing. Responsible for the structural design including the foundation and superstructure, with significant collaboration with other consultants to handle interface issues by negotiation.• Overcame the material delivery difficulties and optimized the structural design such as proposed alternative foundation design and reviewed R.C. element geometry. Comprehensive discussion among consultants in different disciplines was held to reach a final design that met the regulations satisfactorily.• I was also assigned to assess the construction methodologies submitted by serval tenderers. Therefore, I acquired the ability to consider a situation from a multitude of viewpoints and present my ideas confidently.

• Initial position was to draft design drawings. During my first few weeks, I used my initiative to study structural design of different materials such as steel, laminated glass and aluminum in compliance with the formal submission standard. It was then accepted by my supervisor and implemented on site. This led to being given more responsibilities and challenging tasks. At the end of the internship, I earned an opportunity to continue my employment as a part-time assistant engineer and be involved in a wide range of minor works.
