As the President Mr. Kamat again demonstrated his natural talent and remarkable ability as organizer and motivator by rejuvenating the committee and energizing its cadre. He went on to lead the Indian Youth Congress as its President in 1987.In December 1984, the Party High Command nominated Mr. Kamat to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North East Parliamentary constituency, an election which he won, trouncing the then sitting MP Dr. Subramaniam Swamy and Mr. Pramod Mahajan of the BJP. He defeated Mrs. Jaywantiben Mehta of BJP in 1991 & Mr. Pramod Mahajan again in 1998. In 2003, he was appointed President of Mumbai Congress. During this tenure the Congress achieved great successes in Lok Sabha Winning all 6 seats in Mumbai, in Maharashtra Assembly and in Municipal Corporation where Congress won 78 Seats. Grand Shivaji park Rallies were organized under his leadership in 2003 & 2006.In 2009, he was elected Member of Parliament for the 5th time from Mumbai North West Constituency and was also a Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Communications and IT in the UPA Govt. He served as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee in-charge of important states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu besides also being a Member of Congress Working Committee, the top decision making body of Indian National Congress since 2013.
