I joined the MXIF in June 2013 which gave me the opportunity to develop an exciting research in joint and cell mechanics using a combination of high resolution synchrotron X-ray imaging, laser confocal imaging combined with strain mapping and flow tracking techniques. Arthritis is one of the most common diseases affecting an increasingly ageing population. Within arthritic joints the cartilage becomes degraded. As cartilage does not have blood flow the capacity for regeneration or repair is severly limited. This work focused on quantifying the mechanical properties of novel porous hydrogel implants designed to replace damaged cartilage. This contributed to further developing the implants and thus aiding rehabilitation. Tools: microCT, Experimental in vitro device, Analytical/Numerical modelling (biphasic theory)Applications: Tissue engineering
