About Kamna Singh

I am a Delhi-based academic, educator, and artist. Currently, I am pursuing my PhD at Delhi University, focusing on Dalit Literature. Prior to this, I completed my M.Phil. in English Literature from the University of Delhi, where I explored the evolving discourses of power, identity, and experience in Dalit women's autobiographies across different periods. With two years of teaching experience at the University of Delhi, I have honed my pedagogical skills and developed as an educator. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am also engaged in the world of art and modeling. As a freelance model, I have had the privilege to collaborate with renowned fashion photographers, designers, and homegrown brands. However, my true passion lies in artistry and storytelling. Through my artistic endeavors, I delve into the intricate process of storytelling, exploring how narratives unfold through diverse mediums such as bodies, writings, and cameras. My mission is to challenge established power structures and amplify marginalized voices through my work. Inspired by my lived experiences and empathy for erased narratives, I strive to use my platform to empower these voices.

I have had the privilege of working as a sensitivity reader for major news outlets and journals, such as Bloomberg and the British Medical Journal. In this role, I carefully examined articles and publications for tone and content, ensuring that they were respectful and considerate while representing marginalised communities.Additionally, I was also tasked with sensitivity reading Ms Aletta Andre's debut novel and children's book titled "Het meisje dat door India fietste" (The Girl Who Cycled Through India) in the Dutch language. The book is based on the remarkable story of Jyoti Kumari, a 15-year-old Dalit girl from India who cycled her way back to her hometown, Sirhulli in Bihar, during the pandemic situation in 2020. As a sensitivity reader, my role was to ensure that the portrayal of Jyoti's story was done in a sensitive and respectful manner, and that it accurately depicted her experiences as a young girl from a marginalized community.Through my work as a sensitivity reader, I have developed a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the importance of sensitivity and inclusivity in the media and literature. It has been a privilege to contribute to projects that promote empathy and understanding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to use my skills and expertise to make a positive impact in the world.
