S.N.A.I.L. (Niac Phase 1 Study For Spaceborne Interferometry)

The Dark Ages signal is a cosmological phenomenon that is unable to be observed from Earth due to ionospheric interference. Therefore, it is widely proposed that the study of the very low frequency Dark Ages signal be done utilizing a spaceborne architecture. The S.N.A.I.L. (Self-folding Nautilus Antenna for Interferometry with Long-baseline) concept study proposes the use of a shape memory polymer (SMP) bus to deploy an multi-kilometer interferometer array in cislunar space. The initial configuration of the bus can be wound into a co-planar spiral, with a diameter that allows for storage within launch vehicle payload fairing constraints. Once in orbit, the SMP bus will be deployed, and solar energy will be used to fold the SMP bus into a designated spiral geometry that will serve as the interfermoeter basis.Personal Responsibilities: 1.
