Lease Operator

Salt Lake City, Utah, Us

The blame for the recession between 2007 and 2009 falls on mortgage lenders, but the collapse of the housing market had a cascading effect on the entire U.S. economy. My clients were spending significantly less on development, so I had to make up the losses by taking a second job. Over 2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008 so I was willing to look anywhere.I found a job at CR England driving semi trucks as a lease operator. I drove all over the country, hauling 10 hours straight on most days. It was like going on a never ending road trip, which I enjoyed, but trucking is a tiring job. I kept up with changes in regulations, performed daily vehicle inspections, managed trip plans, and interfaced with dispatchers, shippers, and receivers along the route. Assisting with loading and unloading was more common than running the beloved drop-and-hook loads, but truckers are paid to drive; nothing else. Lease payments, maintenance, repairs, fuel, food, and other travel costs are paid by the lease operator. Inefficiencies in the company meant frequent occurrences of not having a next load ready after completing a trip or deadheading (unpaid miles) to the next location. The downtime and deadheading devoured time and costs from the window of productive hours of service between the regulatory 34-hour rest period when drivers have to shut down or pay heavy fines. Too much downtime meant there was often little cash left over at the end of each month.I worked on client projects and app development during breaks while parked at truck stops. Over the next two years, I learned the transportation industry and where technology could improve operations.By 2010, I had a backlog of development ideas and saw an opportunity to put my real talents back to work. I enrolled in a freight brokerage certification program, and became a licensed broker. I had a plan to combine my technical skills with my industry knowledge when I parked the truck for the last time.

2008 - 2010 ~2 yrs

Training Specialist

Basking Ridge, Nj, Us

Moving to Atlanta meant big changes for me. It was my first time living in a major city, and I had jumped two salary bands in the company.I found a freshly built apartment on North Point Parkway just one traffic light from the office. Life was looking pretty good, and so was my new car.The office was also fairly new and still partly under construction. I was part of a new team of Training Specialists, and our role involved performing needs analysis, assessing workforce skills inventories, developing curriculum, and delivering instructor-led training courses. The course topics included telecommunications technologies, standard operating procedures, business systems training, and soft skill enablement. We were PowerPoint ninjas.Having the responsibility to deliver training courses across a wide array of topics meant that I was constantly learning. I soon found myself delivering courses as a subject matter expert to shared services centres across the country. In 2000, Bell Atlantic acquired GTE in a $64.7 billion merger becoming the largest telephone company in the U.S. with 63 million lines in service. The new combined company changed its name to Verizon. My responsibilities as a result of the merger evolved from delivering training courses to conducting business process analysis, making workforce consolidation recommendations, and managing systems integration projects. I travelled constantly and facilitated tough conversations with employees whose roles were at risk of being eliminated. One of the most valuable lessons I learned from this role is that workers are people with families, friends, and lives outside of the workplace. The decisions we make as managers are never "just business" when they affect the lives of those included in the outcome of those decisions.

1998 - 2002 ~4 yrs

Technical Specialist

One of the stakeholders who benefited from my development work was the head of a new department responsible for provisioning high-capacity circuits. Installations could take a few weeks depending on the requirements and were managed as projects. To track these projects, the department used Lotus Notes, and they needed a developer.I was certified in telecommunication technology fundamentals, and the department head saw my potential as a developer. My supervisor called me to her office, and I saw the department head seated as I entered. He asked if I'd like to work on his team as a Technical Specialist, managing installation projects and designing tools for the team. I accepted. It didn't take long to find my way around Designer, and I began building tables and forms for the department. I removed repetitive work by creating task plan templates so we could quickly add new projects and designed dashboards so we could track work in progress. But I also had to manage my own installation projects. The department head became my mentor, and I gained experience in coordinating installation teams, handling slippage, and setting expectations with customer executives across a portfolio of 20-30 projects at a time.Within six months, I'd completed the design of our tools, and it was proving itself through our ability to maintain a high rate of on-time project completion. It was nearly Christmas when the department head asked if I would consider moving to Atlanta for a new role. At first, I said no. I'd only been in North Carolina for a year, but I'd made friends and felt at home.He leaned toward me as if to use Jedi mind touch and asked me again if I was willing to at least consider an offer. I did not say no twice.Days later, I received a call from a manager in Atlanta. We discussed the role, and she presented an offer. I would jump two salary bands, and receive a relocation package plus a signing bonus, which allowed me to buy a new car.I said yes.

Jun 1997 - Dec 1997

Billing Specialist

I moved to North Carolina and settled into my first cubicle with a nameplate. I worked in a department of specialists processing service change orders for home and business customers. The Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was intended to improve infrastructure by allowing any company to compete in local markets caused order volumes to surge. The customer service reps took calls from customers who wanted to make service changes and drop handwritten orders in a basket. It was the specialist's job to pick up the orders and bring them to the provisioning office. The frenzy felt like the NYSE trading floor. The job required extensive training and a shelf in each cubicle full of reference manuals, but most of the work was very repetitive and boring.Commercial orders could be 20-30 pages of lines and could take hours to complete. Sometimes orders would pile up, and the whole team would fall days behind. We accessed the system through a mainframe terminal running in Windows 95, which I discovered made it possible to script macros. I wrote a script that read a text file and navigated through the terminal screens copying the data into the required fields.I got bolder as I tested with more orders, and I created a library of template text files as I encountered more scenarios. The macro was faster than any specialist, which I proved when I printed my log with 400 completed orders, 10 times the daily 40-order quota.Once again, I found myself called into an office, but this time it was to show the process to the IT department. My little script soon turned into software, and I never saw the terminal window again. The IT director took an interest in me and began giving me projects. Under his tutelage, I designed Microsoft Access databases, forms, reports, and VBA scripts for various departments.I had no idea who was using the applications I built, but I would soon find out.

Jan 1997 - Jun 1997

Central Office Dispatcher

I started my career in 1996 at GTE as a Central Office Dispatcher in South Carolina. It was a monotonous job, but the paycheck was three times more than I made at my previous fast food jobs.As the rookie, I spent the night shift working on a mainframe system, entering hundreds of location codes to check for alarms. I repeated the list hourly because the dot-matrix alarm printer was unreliable. In case of an alarm, I searched a three-ring binder for the location's on-call schedule, woke up a technician, and relayed details of the alarm.Frequently, alarms were not critical, but the alarm codes were not documented, so it was only by repetition that one would learn the difference. It only took a couple of angry field technicians to prompt me to make notes. After weeks of making notes and interrogating colleagues, I assembled a new three-ring binder with a code list and procedure for every location. I made copies for my colleagues.I soon learned that labour unions stifle innovation. Once word spread about the new manual, I was met at the door by my supervisor and threatened that I'd lose my job. Apparently, I had done the job of a union member, although I wondered why the manual didn't already exist since the member had been around much longer than me.By chance, I had previously mentioned the manual to a company VP one night during a critical incident. She was impressed by how I handled the incident. I told her I simply followed the manual. She asked for a copy, which I sent, and I thought nothing else of it.I didn't know my supervisor reported to the same VP. She overruled the supervisor and was the first person in my career to recognize I had more to offer. I earned a promotion and a relocation package to move to North Carolina.
