Software EngineerMicrosoft Corporation May 2009 - Aug 2010Redmond, Washington, Us• Co-designed a feed ingestion pipeline that takes different types of data feeds, pre-processes the feeds, and eventually sends the feeds to downstream system for more fine-grained processing. This design allows easy support and configuration for different feeds by breaking the process into independent actions. These actions can be individually configured and streamed in various ways in the format of XML to accommodate complex business needs. Since production deployment, this pipeline has been taking in large volumes of offer feeds, product feeds, and review feeds for Bing Shopping every day without any issues.• Developed a desktop tool using C#, .NET, and SQL Server that allows the operations team to configure actions mentioned above without having to write any XML. Also automated a daily report that captures metrics of the feed ingestion pipeline. These tools reduced the amount of manual work required to onboard new feeds and monitor the system.• Developed a test automation system using C#, .NET, and SQL Server that was used to ensure the overall quality of the feed ingestion pipeline. This automation system is based on XML configuration that describes how to set up test scenarios, execute tests, report test results, and clean up test data. The XML approach allows great flexibility in changing and adding test scenarios.• Using Struts and AJAX, developed a web-based tool that can check if the cashback page shows up for a particular merchant. The checks can be saved and scheduled to automatically run and send out results via email. -
Software Development EngineerAmazon.Com Aug 2007 - May 2009Seattle, Wa, Us• With a team of four SDEs, designed, implemented, tested, and launched the Vendor Setup Workflow system for Amazon’s vendors. Amazon’s buyers and external vendors use this system to enrol their businesses with Amazon. The workflow brought together several complicated steps into a single coherent system: contract creation/negotiation, payment account setup, vendor account creation, etc. This system considerably reduced the amount of manual work required from Amazon’s buyers, streamlined the vendor registration process, and based on internal surveys, increased buyer productivity by overall 50% in the US. Feedback from many vendors also showed that this system was easier to use and more reliable than what other competitors such as Wal-Mart provided. Single-handedly tested and launched this system in Japan and Europe under very tight schedule and management pressure.• The front-end of the Vendor Setup Workflow system was implemented using HTML, Perl (Mason), and Javascript. The back-end was a number of web services implemented in Java and an Oracle database. Demonstrated excellent OOD, web application development, and database schema design skills. • Developed other applications that provided vendors with a better experience on Amazon’s vendor platform. One of the highlights was the Case Log tool that managed vendors’ contacts in a thread-like fashion.• Created a code generator using Java Servlets, JSP and Tomcat, which helped SDEs speed up front-end development. Most of our web applications follow the same pattern and I took the opportunity to create a tool that generated a lot of the common code. Also created a Perl unit testing application using AJAX that helped SDEs test their front-end Perl code. Both of these tools were welcomed by the team and contributed to the team’s productivity and the quality of their work. -
