I have been lucky to get the opportunity to run a small business in a highly technical field. Fortunately, I had the technical training and the temperament to lead a handful of very talented engineers in a variety of projects. A lot of our work at SySense, Inc. involved SBIR and STTR grants as well as direct contracts and subcontracts to provide research and development work in support of a large aerospace programs. We have assisted in the development of adaptive feedback control methods to maintain control of hypersonic vehicles as well as optimally planning its trajectory, of methods for autonomous aerial refueling, and of fault detection, identification and isolation techniques. We even had developed a smartphone application to make use of all the sensors on a smartphone to calculate the location of distant objects. From our efforts on these high-end aerospace applications, we developed our proprietary RTK GPS solver that allows the use of extremely low-cost components. It is designed to be RTK GPS for the rest of us. Encapuslated in our Phase Ruler product concept, we still hope to find a partner to bring it to market.Given that we were a small firm, I was not only a technical lead but also volunteered to take on thea adminsitrative task to running a small business, with federal government work. I have admit, I didn't necessarily hate learning some the nuance of FAR/DFARS. All jokes aside, there is a rational logic to those regulations. It's just not an "easy read."

PresidentSysense, Inc Mar 2012 - PresentUsWe are a small research firm in guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) in aerospace applications. We specialize in relative GNC, fault detection, sensor fusion, adaptive control and estimation to find innovative and novel solutions to engineering challenges. After joining directly from my post-doctoral studies, I somehow ended up running the whole place and managing it through a complete transition from its founding members. Being a small business, my duties range from the mundane of keeping business operations running and directing highly-trained engineers on research & development efforts. -
CfoSysense, Inc Jan 2009 - Mar 2012UsBeing a small firm, the role of Chief Financial Officer is a title of convenience to indicate that I was one of the principal leads. My responsibilities ranged from maintaing the account books, making strategic decision for projects to pursue, maintaining client/customer relations, and to managing the technical aspects of various projects. In addition to learning how to learn to run a small business, I also had to learn the nuances of Federal Aquisition Regulations and DFARS.I was able to successfully answer DCAA cost audits and a labor floor check to maintain our ability to bill directly with the Federal Government. -

Postdoctral ScholarUcla - Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Mar 2006 - Nov 2008Los Angeles, Ca, UsContinued work started during doctoral studies. Development of control scheme to reduce viscous drag in a channel. Numerical models developed to not only demonstrated sustained sub-laminar drag, but also to devise feed-back schemes to mitigate secondary instabilities. Development and numerical simulation done in both Matlab and Fortran. Primary responsible for maintenance of lab equipment, this includes all computers (different OS) as well as other devices. Prof Speyer's laboratory supports research in other fields as well. -
