To compare the macular ganglion cell complex and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness map in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), glaucoma suspects (GS) and age and sex matched healthy subjects. Also, to correlate between two group (mGCC & ppRNFL) in different quadrants. Method: Diagnosed cases of POAGs, GS and control group were included in purposively selected cross-sectional study. Subjects were diagnosed as primary open-angle glaucoma and glaucoma suspected according to the clinical findings intraocular pressure (IOP) & visual field defects as per Hodappa-Parrish-Anderson criteria. mGCC and ppRNFL thickness were measured using Heidelberg spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. And reading were compared between three study groups. Result: A total of 80 eyes (POAG= 19, GS=21) with mean age of 47.05±13.92 years and 30 healthy subjects with mean age of 33.06±13.24 were included. mGCC was found to be significantly thinner in all quadrants superiorly (p=0.003), inferiorly (p=0.004), temporally (p=0.008), nasally (p=0.008) and central (p=0.007) on right eye and superiorly (p=0.01), inferiorly (p=0.001), temporally (p=0.001), nasally (p<0.001) along with central (p<0.001) on left eye. Similarly, ppRNFL thickness was also significantly thinner superiorly (p=0.091) & global (p=0.016) but not in temporal (p=0.05), inferior (p=0.39), nasal (p=0.10) in right eye. In left eye superior (p<0.001), temporal (p<0.001), and global were significantly thinner but inferior and nasal weren't statistically significantly. B/L showed significantly positive correlation between mGCC and ppRNFL in superior or inferior temporal quadrants (p<0.001) whereas negative correlation on nasal quadrant.Conclusion:mGCC parameter had higher capability for the diagnosis of glaucoma and better correlated with ppRNFL parameters. The ability to diagnose POAG with mGCC thickness is comparable to ppRNFL thickness so it can be considered as a good alternative to ppRNFL thickness.
