About Kara Ashcraft Ph.D.
With over 10 years of work experience in the health, fitness, and medical fields, I am a passionate and driven biomechanics researcher. My research has focused on human sport performance, especially for athletes with lower limb impairment and amputation. I am motivated by the challenge of advancing the scientific knowledge and the clinical practice in this area, and by the opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary experts and stakeholders. I bring diverse perspectives and experiences to the team, as I have a background in physiology, human biology, and nursing, and I have worked as a medical assistant and a personal trainer in various settings. As a PhD student in the Applied Biomechanics Lab, I conducted experiments, analyzed data, and wrote publications on the biomechanics of running and long jump. I used various tools and methods, such as motion capture, force plates, and musculoskeletal modeling, to investigate the effects of different factors, such as prosthetic design, joint stiffness, and muscle activation, on the performance and injury risk of athletes. I also applied my skills in fitness, exercise physiology, and phlebotomy to assist in the recruitment, testing, and training of the participants. I enjoy working with a supportive and innovative team that strives for excellence and impact in the field.

Research Scientist
Translate pharmaceutical and medical device client business needs into actionable, decentralized clinical research studies leveraging person- generated health data from wearable sensors and surveys.• Author all study documents, oversee IRB approval process, oversee study conduct as Principal Investigator.• Interacts with the functional leads to understand all data requirements and translates them into data structures and data model requirements, where needed in collaboration with IT.• Defines criteria for monitoring integrity of data modeling during projects.• Works with senior leaders and business leaders providing technical guidance related to data architecture, data models and meta data management.• Drives data modeling and testing during projects.
Phd Student
Led investigation of the biomechanics of female runners with a leg amputation, to identify optimal prosthetic prescription in order to improve distance running performance and mitigate injury risk. Collected quantitative data using force instrumented treadmills, motion capture, Instron materials testing machine, IMUs and metabolic testing to measure asymmetries in ground reaction forces and biomechanical parameters such as contact time, prosthesis and leg stiffness, and joint motions during running. Utilized biomechanical modeling by creating custom pipelines in Visual 3D to translate motion capture data into biomechanical metrics. Created custom MATLAB scripts and functions to structure data and perform rapid calculations of kinematics. Performed material stiffness testing on running-specific prostheses and running shoes to determine dynamic function.Led investigation of the long jump take-off step technique of athletes with and without leg amputation, in order to understand the role in-series stiffness plays in jump distance. Collected quantitative data using force plates, accelerometers, and high-speed cameras to measure running speed, ground reaction forces, and elastic energy absorption during the long jump take-off step. Led investigation on novel characterization of the mechanical properties of posterior ankle-foot orthosis struts.Engineered a custom three-point bending mechanism which used motion capture and strain gauges to test stiffness characteristics of carbon-fiber struts. Generated one-way ANOVAs and R2 values, as well as appropriate data visualizations using R-studio. Collaborated with industry partners in multiple disciplinary fields. Transformed qualitative footwear data into measurable metrics, while accounting for anthropometric variances occurring between users, as well as across product sizing, in order to inform product design and performance consistency on a specific timeline.
