About Kara Barkman
My personal connection to immigration justice began at the age of 7 when my parents enrolled me in the local elementary school with an English/Spanish dual-language immersion program. Since then, I have dedicated part of my undergraduate studies to experiences of transnationalism, international affairs, and global development and social justice - all connected to the experiences of refugees, asylum seekers, and other international migrants. After college, I volunteered as a middle school English teacher in a rural community in Puebla, Mexico. Living in an intercultural context, speaking Spanish, learning bits and pieces of the Nahuatl language, and encountering the realities of migration in a country that is a sending community, host country, and transitional space for many on their migration journey. I later spent a year working with a refugee resettlement agency in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, gaining more first-hand experience in the field, and learning about the direct impacts of policy on the experiences of refugees resettling into our communities. I am now working to obtain a Masters in Refugee Integration from Dublin City University. I am especially interested in the educational opportunities that refugees and asylum seekers have (or do not have), and how our teachers are prepared to work with these vulnerable populations. I hope this will lead me to work within either advocacy or policy to help refugee individuals access traditional educational opportunities and outside ESL assistance within the U.S. I am also interested in whether educational opportunities are offered in spaces of transition, and pursuing potential solutions for this. My dissertation will be an analysis of the practices and attitudes of teachers in a small rural school district in Washington State, and how prepared teachers feel to work with students who have experienced forced displacement. I am thrilled to be partnering with the WA State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) on this project.
Listed skills include Leadership, Event Planning, Microsoft Office, Research, and 4 others.
