Life has a funny way of hiding the signs that direct you on your path. Looking back now, the signs I missed seem totally obvious, complete with arrows and blinking lights that say “Kara, speech pathology is for you!” The signs (in chronological order): • I’ve always known that my true passion in life is lending a supportive and helping hand. (I get it from my mother. Thanks, Mom!) • I actually remember being jealous of my classmates that got to go hangout with our school SLP and audiologist. My classmate had the coolest personal FM system for a while.• My uncle and I adore each other. He has an intellectual disability and doesn’t like to leave the house, but he taught me how to fix my bike and snuck me Reese Cups.• I took a job teaching literacy to elementary kids over the summers. One particular student was nonverbal, and I was at a loss for how to handle that. That class of 6 year-olds taught me what it meant to be truly inclusive. That’s the short list. Years ago, I took a chance on some advice of a friend and applied for the speech pathology program at WVU. Lucky for me, that advice rocked. Since then, I’ve faced the adversity of life and have grown as a professional, life student, and soul. First and foremost, I’m kind, outgoing, and dedicated. I welcome constructive feedback and thrive in dynamic environments. I have clinical skills working with diverse individuals, ages 2 through geriatric, with various disabilities and diagnoses in the medical- and school-based settings. I enjoy the spontaneity of working with children and the restorative aspect of working with adults. I am now the Clinic Director and a speech-language pathologist at Positive Steps Therapy, part of Ivy Rehab for Kids, in Washington, PA. #OneIvy
