My name is Kara Fleck, I am currently a fourth-year pharmacy student at Binghamton University School of Pharmacy working towards earning a PharmD.I have over four years of experience with CVS pharmacy, starting as a technician and then a pharmacy intern. Working in the community has given me an opportunity to interact with diverse different patient populations as well as directly impact their care through increasing access to vaccinations and medication counseling.As a student, I pursed several opportunities that have allowed me to develop my interests and career goals. Alongside my classes, I have earned a micro-credential through the TRUST program that consisted of extra training in working with rural and underserved populations. I have also held an ambassador position with the National MS Society focusing on patient advocacy which really showed me how important it is for shared decision making to include the patient in chronic disease management.Growing up I was exposed to a lot of diverse populations who I knew I would want to give back to someday. This drove me to the field of pharmacy. The work I was able to do through the TRUST program in terms of drug takeback days, opioid overdose prevention trainings and mental health awareness tabling helped develop my communication and leadership skills.
