I'm a design leader who's skilled at building design culture in large-scale organisations. A lot of my work is the intangible, often hard to measure stuff. It’s the things that fill the gaps and create cohesion and support. It’s immensely valuable things like changing culture, sharing good practice and reducing duplication of effort, promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, attracting and retaining talent, and ultimately creating better services for users. This year I was named an international ‘Top 35 Government Talent Trailblazer’ by Apolitical for my work in ‘21st Century Skills Mainstreaming and Community Building’.Since 2023, I’ve been a Head of Design at the Government Digital Service. I lead the design profession working across the whole organisation to develop an engaged and high performing professional design community, create our learning and development offer, improve our recruitment and retention, support workforce planning, support individual directorates through sharing, standardisation and re-use, and advocate for user-centred design inside and outside the organisation.Together with Clara Greo and Martin Jordan, I'm writing a book called ‘Strong Design’ about designing culture, capability, and community.In 2017, I co-founded the International Design in Government Community. It's a community for design-minded people working in government in the world. There are 1500 members from over 70 countries. I regularly speak at international events about the importance of user-centred design and community approaches — most recently in Germany, Ireland, and the UK. And I used to co-run the London Gov Design Meetup — a meetup for people working in, for or with the public sector as well as those interested in the sector.
