I am also involved in process development and optimization for laboratory procedures, including integration of new equipment and software for increasing efficiency. My primary research as a PhD candidate was swine influenza pathogenesis and prevention of interspecies transmission. Using a swine cell line, I investigated viral:host interactions that can contribute to novel influenza strains emerging from swine and possibly leading to pandemics. I also was involved in novel vaccine technology that creates a broadly reactive protein against influenza for use across multiple species within pandemic threatened areas. Projects included both regional surveillance and sequencing analysis for trends in emerging strains. Protein modeling and bioinformatics programs include python, R studio, Phyre, BLAST and CLUSTAL.
