While conversing with a quirky and successful Southland New Zealander, I became aware that his long-term Timber industry goals could greatly benefit from a GIS. After concise and careful explanation of the wonders of a GIS, his eyes grew large with excitement and upon my return to the states, we began a long-distance, collaborative effort to help multiple New Zealand managers realize their timber management and information goals. I spent 4.5 months driving a fork lift in the name of science while I sought out an opportunity to meet a penguin. The experiences and enlightenment that came from communicating and helping scientists organize their field equipment and package their gear is, and will always remain, invaluable.- Communicating regularly with science groups and air-cargo handlers to assist in packing research equipment and science samples for inter- and intra-continental movement- Operated large equipment fork lifts and front loaders- Supported work centers while resolving issues that would inevitably arise from working in an isolated environment with limited resources

The day that sculpted my entire future was the day I sat in my Environmental Modeling course, listening and learning from a man radiating so much excitement and passion for GIS modeling that I couldn't help but become even more hooked than I already was. Dr. Rafael Moreno-Sanchez became my advising professor, colleague and friend. We began evaluating biological corridors for La Selva Biological Research Station utilizing multiple spatial pattern analysis softwares and have continued plans to write a grant for the continued research and return to the research station to help them achieve their endeavors in prioritization of wildlife corridors.- Collaborating with La Selva to understand their goals- Spatial data exploration and Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis of land cover utilizing three GIS softwares, including: GUIDOS (Graphical User Interface for the Description of Image Objects and their Shapes), Conefor Sensinode 2.6 and ArcGIS 10.x- Creating and presenting a report on the Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis results to a panel of decision-makers from La Selva

I was lucky enough to learn from and work with another wonderful person who would help to develop my future path in GIS, Dr. Peter Anthamatten. Dr. Anthamatten and Dr. Deborah Thomas approached me about an interesting opportunity working on a project funded by multiple state hospitals and after accepting the position I was assigned the task of exploring the idea of Walkability. The project itself dealt with the issue of Body Mass Index (BMI) in the field of Health and the goals were to analyze built-environment and socio-economic factors in relation to patterns of BMI in Colorado.- Literature reviews and exploration of existing Walkability indices in urban communities- Seeking out the best data sets for spatial exploration of Walkability in Denver County, Colorado- Creation of a repeatable Walkability index using ArcGIS 10.x- Maintaining data dictionaries and meta data for original, scratch and resulting data sets- Writing reports of methods and results
