I have a passion for the advancement of science and I love being able to share that passion with anyone who will listen!Since softball can’t be my full time gig, I had to find my “why” elsewhere. Originally going into freshman year as a double bio/chem major taking 18 credits while also playing a sport (should have thought that one out better), you may be wondering how I ended up with a Master’s Degree in Psychology. I find the brain to be fascinating! Insert Neuroscience and human behavior. What’s the organ we know the least about? The brain. Here goes Kara’s curiosity… I worked at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in the Geriatric Psychiatry Neuroimaging lab for 5 years prior to getting into clinical trials with investigational new drugs. UPMC WPH has continued to rank first nationally in psychiatric research funding from NIH. My experience lies heavily in study operations, all encompassing start-up, acquisition of data, management, and clinical oversight at the site and regional level. With strong person-centered communication skills, recruitment and retention of study participants has inherently been a focal point, resulting in quality data. Building relationships and ensuring a positive experience for participants is my continued priority in the mission to reduce the stigma and diversify clinical trials.Working at a top research institute at both the ground level and clinical operations management, I have a unique advantage of identifying quality issues and procedural deficits. I have the critical thinking skills to implement new standard procedures to continue the global goal of valid and reliable research practices.In all my spare time (🤣), I coach and mentor 40+ young girls for fastpitch softball. I’m most known for pitching, but train all areas of the game! I believe a well-rounded, confident, disciplined, and respectful athlete are keys to the next generation’s success! I adore my softball family and they continue to fuel my inner fire in every area of my life. Coaching is a constant reminder in my day-to-day to stay grounded and focus on the little things. Those little things make a big difference over time. Dedication and hard work will persevere!
