I worked in NERA's securities and finance practice, where I did research and analyses for clients involved in finance-related litigation as part of NERA's role as economic consultants. This typically involved creating work products for use in litigation involving losses on investments and informing clients about relevant financial and economic implications.My role focused on developing case strategies and action plans, managing teams of analysts, preparing exhibits and/or expert reports, and communicating results to clients. My role also included preparing for trials, other testimonies, and/or mediations on relevant financial issues. The underlying work primarily involved analyzing data (market and company-specific data), performing research (e.g. on security structures, company histories, industry trends), and valuing various securities. Companies analyzed were in industries that included financials, insurance, manufacturing, electronics, energy, and consumer products. Securities and funds analyzed include stocks, preferred stocks, bonds with various features, mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities, extendible notes, auction-rate securities, exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, hedge funds, and privately held funds. The contexts of cases included analysis of losses in a specific security or in an investment fund, general valuation analyses, and insider trading cases.I also led NERA's programming team that maintains and develops its proprietary software used to calculate estimates of investor losses in securities class action ("stock price drop") and similar lawsuits. This software includes modeling investor trading in securities and estimating alleged inflation over time by analyzing stock price movements.
