As a Medical Scribe, I used Cerner's documentation system to record and compile the medical history, treatment, and care of patients for practitioners including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. I was able to give practitioners the opportunity to have quality provider-patient connections without the worry of their time and attention dedicated to charting. I had the amazing experience to work with the Firehouse Shelter Screening Clinic. This shelter and clinic serves homeless men within the Birmingham area and its mission is to empower them to achieve their highest potential and connect them to resources. One of the ways it does this is by providing a screening clinic to help them understand possible chronic conditions, health status, as well as provided educational presentations about ways to improve health outcomes and quality of life. I was… Show more I had the amazing experience to work with the Firehouse Shelter Screening Clinic. This shelter and clinic serves homeless men within the Birmingham area and its mission is to empower them to achieve their highest potential and connect them to resources. One of the ways it does this is by providing a screening clinic to help them understand possible chronic conditions, health status, as well as provided educational presentations about ways to improve health outcomes and quality of life. I was hand selected to be one of two interns to perform all administrative tasks and oversee operations and flow of the screening clinic. Through this position, I collaborated with multiple disciplines in healthcare from occupational therapy, nursing, physician assistant studies, etc. My primary role was to improve healthcare access to patients by getting them connected to local health resources and establishing primary care. I took pride in my work and my top priority was my patients. I streamlined processes to reduce bottlenecks and improve clinic flow, and, with my partner's help, improved capacity for patient intake from an average of 6-8 to 12-14 individuals. I maintained follow-up and scheduled appointments for patients in primary care, dental, and vision services. In this position, I developed training materials for new assistants in my last two summers, mentored other conference assistants, and provided customer service to camp directors and parents of camp participants. My job was crucial as I planned and delivered resident enrichment programs for academic and professional student development. I developed close connections with my residents that created mentorships and friendships that would last throughout undergrad, perhaps beyond. Most important was my ability to respond during emergencies and sensitive situations (e.g… Show more Through my role as a Resident Assistant, I was responsible for the protection and safety of 70 residents over three full academic years. I developed close connections with my residents that created mentorships and friendships that would last throughout undergrad, perhaps beyond. Most important was my ability to respond during emergencies and sensitive situations (e.g. fire evacuation, suicide prevention, etc.) where I cared for residents' needs and helped them connect to any resources they needed (e.g. UAB Police Dept., Student Counseling Services, etc.). I also upheld their privacy and protection through FERPA law enforcement. Though, all of this could not have been accomplished without my collaborating with a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) committed to the well-being of their residents. This was primarily a student-run division and teaming with my fellow RAs helped make this role successful and fulfilling.
