At White Pine Programs, I worked to empower people to strengthen their communities and themselves by building connections to the natural world. I worked within nature connection programs for people of all ages and skill levels, from six-year-olds to scientists to elders.In these programs, people develop a deep eco-literacy. They learn the names of the plants blossoming by their doorsteps and the animals denning nearby. They come to see and understand the tracks and trails that cross their paths, and they learn to read the history of the land from the types of trees that shade them as they walk. They play and hide among the hemlocks, create tools, fire and shelter from the gifts of the forest, and sleep under the stars. They listen to the language of the birds, perceiving the hidden hawk because of the robin’s alarm, and they practice listening to one another with openness. Their curiosity and awareness expand. From this awareness springs a new path of conduct in their human and ecological communities.

As a Team Leader, I was also responsible for staff supervision and continuing education. I was responsible for facilitating activities and group processing sessions, and participating in weekly backcountry expeditions. I served as a primary liaison to the clinical and medical teams and was responsible for participating in weekly multidisciplinary treatment team meetings to review students’ treatment and educational progress. I still am a freelance guide with Summit Achievement intermittently.

Designed as a journey experience, our program is based upon the philosophies of experiential learning and is considered therapeutic for the participant. Studies have documented the Wilderness School's impact upon the self esteem, increased locus of control (personal responsibility), and interpersonal skill enhancement of adolescents attending the program.What Do I Do?Here I facilitate youth in outdoor experiential expeditions focusing on positive growth and development through presenting and overcoming challenges while working with peers in an often unfamiliar and unforgiving environment. I lead 20-day wilderness experiences, as well as short 5-8 day courses, and day programs including rock climbing, canoeing, and challenge course facilitation.

What Is Small Axe Farm?We are a small off-grid, self-sustaining homestead farm in Barnet, VT. We have a spring & fall salad greens delivery business and a small vegetable/berry CSA in the summer. Being homesteaders we do everything on our farm. We build all our own buildings pulling wood off our land with our work horses, milling it on our saw mill, then designing & building timber frame structures for our home, barns & out-buildings. We grow our own food, with excess going to our CSA customers (about 12 half shares) & some to local Coop's. We raise our own meat birds & have laying hens. Our goals are to live a life we can believe in & that makes a positive community to live in.What Am I Doing?As an intern at Small Axe Farm, I am engaged in timber framing and homesteading practices geared toward sustaining on this small homestead in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. I am practicing traditional skills while aiding in every day farm tasks and helping to move construction projects forward. I am also actively involved with the surrounding community.

What Did I Do?Here I worked with guests to gain an understanding of their athletic footwear needs based on the activities in which they regularly partake and or plan to partake in, as well as their own individual physiology. He studied the kinesthetics of the body, specifically how it is effected by the foot and ones stride in order to effectively guide guests toward making and informed purchasing decision. Customer service skills and attention to detail were of utmost importance here.
