With over thirty-five years of nursing experience, Karen has served in a variety of executive roles in trauma and emergency nursing as well as women’s and surgical services. Karen currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Nursing and Operations at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and Care Management at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland. Shock Trauma is the nation’s first integrated trauma hospital and is one of the largest trauma treatment and research centers in the U.S. Karen’s transformational leadership style and business acumen have been instrumental in the success of several key initiatives, including the expansion of the trauma/critical care/emergency service; the successful Nurse Magnet application for UMMC; the relocation and building of a 250-bed acute care hospital; and the development of a surgery/obstetric/gynecologic hospitalist program. Karen received her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Maryland, School of Nursing and achieved an MBA from Loyola University, Baltimore. She is a graduate of the class of the 2010 Greater Baltimore Leadership and a 2011 Weinberg Foundation Mission Scholar. Karen is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Currently, Karen is an active Board member of the Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital Center and past Board member at University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute.Most recently Karen has served as the Co-Incident Commander for the Covid-19 pandemic response at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In addition to her clinical and administrative responsibilities, Karen serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing.
