I was the GIS department for a startup mining company preparing to build a major new potash mine in in southeast New Mexico. With the project short of financing, all employees were let go. * Prepared GIS maps (ArcGIS) on a daily basis to support environmental permitting, land & mineral rights management, resource (prospecting) issues, facility planning. * Received and managed geospatial data from project contractors, standardized formats and coordinate systems, and redistributed to project personnel to support project design and permitting. * Designed and implemented a relational database (Access) for mineral rights and prospecting data. * Monitored oil & gas activity (esp. new permits) on a regular basis to protect crucial areas (drifts) in the mine plan. * Created a system for organizing the company's GIS data and a numbering scheme for GIS project files.

Document Specialist responsible for preparing regulatory Notifications and Closeout Reports for select soil contamination sites at the ROCKY FLATS ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY SITE (COLORADO) CLOSURE PROJECT. Took full responsibility for report preparation, including technical writing, technical analysis of large sets of analytical data pertaining to soil contamination, preparation of tables and maps, data quality analysis and quality assurance, and resolving all regulatory agency concerns to the satisfaction of the regulator. Worked extended hours as needed to meet an aggressive schedule of deadlines. Reviewed incoming soil data to ensure compliance with applicable work plans and standard operating procedures, and to identify areas of contaminated soil requiring further sampling and/or remediation. Interacted with sampling team leaders, data managers, and GIS personnel to ensure that accurate and complete data sets were used for decision making at individual sites and that the data presentations provided for regulatory review were of the highest quality. Reviewed groundwater and surface water data associated with individual soil contamination sites to ensure that selected remedies were protective of groundwater and surface water as required under the Rocky Flats Cleanup Agreement.

DENVER FEDERAL CENTER ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLING PLANS: Authored two RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) work plans for the Denver Federal Center. Inspected site and reviewed historical docments and aerial photographs. Identified potential contaminant sources and environmental pathways, and created sampling plans to investigate contamination. Created maps using ESRI ARCVIEW. Interacted closely with client and addressed regulators' comments. LOWRY AIR FORCE BASE GROUNDWATER REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION: Project Hydrogeologist responsible for preparing the OU5 (groundwater) Remedial Investigation for Lowry Air Force Base. Interpreted the spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater contaminants, identified possible sources, and characterized migration pathways. Provided a comprehensive assessment of contaminant hydrogeology of shallow aquifers at the site. Compared groundwater quality data to applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements (ARARs), typically SDWA MCLs, to characterize areas in need of remediation. Prepared tables, graphics (maps, cross-sections) and text to clearly illustrate conditions at the site. Responded to reviewer and regulatory agency comments (CDPHE, EPA, Air Force). Conducted FIELD WORK including sampling and monitoring well installation. PUEBLO CHEMICAL DEPOT SAMPLING PLAN: Prepared a sampling and analysis plan for surface soil, subsurface soil, and groundwater at the South Central Terrace of Pueblo Chemical Depot, to be performed in association with in-situ groundwater remediation. Reviewed and incorporated relevant procedures and regulatory guidance as needed.

GOLDSTRIKE MINE (NEVADA) PIT LAKE GEOCHEMICAL MODELING PROJECT: Provided direct technical support to the senior geochemist in charge of a pit lake geochemistry predictive modeling project for the Barrick Goldstrike Mine in Nevada. Managed several Paradox databases containing geochemical data for the project (e.g., groundwater quality data, bulk rock compositions, column leach test data). Performed complex summary calculations on these data sets using Paradox and Quattro. Characterized data distributions using Statistica. Created numerous visual presentations of geochemical data using a variety of software packages (e.g., Quattro, Rockworks). Assisted in characterizing discrete geochemical types of groundwater in the pit area and relating these to bedrock geology. Used column test data to predict leachate compositions as a function of the rock types present at the pit.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ARSENAL LITIGATION SUPPORT: Support the Colorado Attorney General's Office regarding the selection of remedial alternatives for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Reviewed portions of the Army's Detailed Assessment of Alternatives (DAA) and provided technical comments regarding the Army's soil volume calculation method. Attended technical meetings with the State and other parties. GEOCHEMICAL PROJECTS: (1) Assisted with a geochemical investigation to determine the origin of high-salinity springwater near a northern Arizona coal mine. Assessed water quality. Oxygen-18, deuterium, and nitrogen-15 data were used to rule out the mining operation as a source of high nitrate levels. Prepared a detailed technical report presenting the findings of this investigation. (2) Conducted geochemical data analysis and equilibrium modeling (MINTEQA2, PHREEQE) of inorganic contaminants in groundwater at an eastern Wyoming uranium mill tailings site. Assessed data quality, evaluated temporal trends, and predicted contaminant mobility as a function of pH and groundwater flow direction. OTHER PROJECTS: (1) Supervised the installation of four free-product recovery wells at a central Kansas oil refinery. Completed geologic logs and documented well installation details for each of the locations. (2) Prepared reports of quarterly flow measurements (volumetric discharge) and geochemical data for Laguna Creek, a groundwater-fed creek near a northern Arizona coal mine.

PREPARATION OF TECHNICAL DOCUMENTS: Assisted in preparing the U.S. Army's Remedial Investigation Summary Report for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and the OU1 Remedial Investigation/RCRA Facility Investigation Report for the DOE Rocky Flats Plant. Tasks included extensive technical writing and editing, integrating diverse data sets to provide comprehensive assessments of contamination, preparing formal responses to regulatory agency comments, and compiling and presenting data in maps, tables, and cross-sections. Also served on the technical writing team for the Rocky Flats 1992 "Waste Stream and Residue Identification and Characterization Report," an encyclopedic description of all wastes and waste-generating processes at the plant at that time. ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD WORK: Served as a rig geologist in field investigations at the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety Geff Alternative Site in Wayne County, Illinois; the DOE Portsmouth Plant near Piketon, Ohio; the Army Corps of Engineers Mid-America Industrial Park in Pryor, Oklahoma, and the DOE Rocky Flats Plant near Denver. Oversaw drilling, logged core samples, installed and sampled monitoring wells, and conducted aquifer testing.
