Karen Phillips has 25 years of experience working in the arts and cultural sector in Ireland, UK and internationally, fulfilling a wide range of development, fundraising, marketing and event management roles. Karen holds a Masters in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London and a BA (Hons) First Class in Design from Glasgow School of Art. Karen lives in Ireland and her creative work as a director, curator and artist reflects the need in these times for people to come together. Her artistic practice is an evolving, collaborative approach which puts ideas around belonging or forming a community in the forefront.Karen currently holds the position of Head of Arts at the Royal Dublin Society. Karen was the CEO of North Lands Creative (2016-2022). As CEO, she was responsible for the strategic direction of the International Centre of Excellence for Glass, the quality, status and relevance of its artistic programme, its reputation and relationships with audiences and stakeholders.Karen was the inaugural Executive Director of RUA RED, South Dublin Arts Centre (2008-2016) Ireland’s largest multidisciplinary arts centre, a significant capital project designed by South Dublin County Council. She managed the establishment of the exhibition and live programme, creative learning activities and incubation studios for creative businesses.Roles outside the cultural sector include Development Manager, Louth County Enterprise Board, a regeneration programme commissioning action research projects and training to inform a regional strategy for creative industries in the East Border Region of Ireland with the SEUPB Peace and Interreg Programmes.Karen has an outstanding track record in fundraising, creating and implementing strategies with an excellent knowledge and already established relationships, networks and contacts with funders nationally (UK-wide) and internationally.

The role involved working with North Lands Creative programmes across the globe I carried out a considerable ambassadorial role to nurture good relationships and create new innovative partnerships. Leading a team to programme, produce and respond to themes, specifically focusing on under-represented voices and developing different ways for artists and audiences to access and engage with glass as an art form and the investigation into material culture.The national and international scope of North Lands Creative requires my role to lead on managing effective partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders within the Culture, Arts & Heritage sectors.The organisation is a Creative Scotland Regular Funded Organisation. I was responsible for allaspects of negotiating funding terms and writing stakeholder funding applications and reports. I have managed a complex series of partnerships in multiple sectors working with a large number of stakeholders on the company’s behalf and raised significant funding from multi-strands including the Scottish Government, Creative Scotland, EU Creative Europe, British Council, Corra Foundation, The Radcliffe Trust, Foyle Foundation, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Visit Scotland. -
Executive Director/ Company SecretaryRua Red Aug 2008 - Aug 2016Tallaght, Dublin 24The inaugural Executive Director of RUA RED, South Dublin Arts Centre, Ireland’s largest local authority multidisciplinary arts centre, housing two galleries, theatre auditorium, dance studio, conference facilities, digital media suite, recording facilities, music rooms, workshop areas, artist’s studios, offices and a café. On appointment l led the final fit-out phase of the new three-storey arts centre building. An award-winning capital project, designed by South Dublin County Council Architects Department, winning three LAMA awards in 2009 for Best Arts Building, Best Public Building and overall Grand Prix Award.Leading on the exhibition and live programme, creative learning activities and incubation studios for creative businesses, I delivered RUA RED’s artistic strategy for eight years to build a programme of local and international appeal through co-production partnerships, working closely with South Dublin County Council Arts Office, Office of Public Works, Dublin Dance Festival, Dublin Fringe, CREATE, Culture Ireland, Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, and NCAD. I evolved a highly successful audience development strategy to strengthen the centre’s relationships to increase the impact and influence within the contemporary arts field. -
