    My capstone team and I designed, prototyped and tested a low cost, ventilator substitute for under resourced hospitals. Our goal was to have a portable, durable, battery powered device that safely and accurately provides ventilation in areas without access to proper mechanical ventilators. We used SolidWorks to design several parts of the apparatus. The parts were then 3D printed and assembled. Our test results demonstrated that our device was able to provide tidal volumes (L) and respiratory rate (breath/min) within the range acceptable for human lungs. When COVID began, our prototype received a lot of attention as a resource to manufacture due to the lack of ventilators around the world. Our prototype was taken up by another Rice team who iterated on our prototype to create an FDA approved design. In addition, our team worked with rice University to make all of our work OpenSource and open to the public for replication and additional research. •Facilitated weekly team meetings with the client to gather design criteria and to communicate progress•Designed and created a 3D printed ventilator substitute for low resource countries after thorough research on existing technologies and interviews with medical personnel•Iterated prototype after several rounds of controlled testing and feedback from subject matter experts•Documented engineering design process, project timeline, FDA regulations and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis to hand off project to a continuing team

The majority of our work took place in the University of Malawi's Design Studio and several district hospitals in Malawi. As a part of this internship, I worked with engineering students at the University of Malawi Polytechnic (aka the Poly) to accomplish the following goals.•Identified twelve opportunities for development in four district hospitals in Malawi and documented relevant feedbackfrom nurses/doctors• Partnered with two Malawian students to reduce the failure of suction pump machines (medical devices) by creating a low cost, and easy to use power interrupter triggered by bodily fluids overflowing into the suction pump motor• Designed captivating video and billboard advertisements utilized to showcase the work funded by the Lemelson Foundation

I dedicated a lot of my time to this club because I was eager to build a strong Latinx community at Rice as well as represent my Mexican-American culture. In my years as Vice President and President, I:• Increased the Latino presence and awareness on campus by engaging students through new events (e.g. Hispanic Heritage Month Festival, Latinos at Rice Photo Campaign, DACA Rally, Rice Quinceañera Party)• Budgeted, Organized, and Planned the largest Latinx Cultural Show on campus (Ritmo!) (2016-2017). Our show featured performances and foods from over 8 Latinx countries.     Starting in the summer of of my freshman year at Rice University, I participated in an engineering design internship where I created a low cost, reusable, and interactive pelvic mannequin to train OB/GYNs to perform cervical cancer screening called the Low-cost Universal Instructional Apparatus (LUCIA). The summer internship carried on through my Junior year at Rice. After working with several student teams and doctors, the LUCIA model is now published and continues to be used in developing countries for training purposes. • Defined client’s needs through collaboration with several OB/GYNs• Successfully incorporated many screening procedures and several stages of cervical cancer into one model created with laser cut acrylic body and 3D printed cervix models• Received positive feedback after testing with doctors in the field for preliminary data for our research paper• Received Rice Alumni Engineering grant as well as MD Anderson grant to fund the project • The LUCIA has been used in cervical cancer prevention courses in the US, El Salvador and Mozambique

    Designed and conducted two separate experiments for characterizing isomalt, a material used with selective laser sintering to fabricate soluble sacrificial templates which are used to create embedded vasculature*• Mapped the correlation between speed and power settings of the laser to the size and quality of the resulting sintered isomalt structures• Determined the stiffness of the material using mechanical testing procedures• Improved the process of creating soluble sacrificial templates by introducing new steps to the procedure and by creating improved 3D printed parts for the existing laser cutter prototype• Summarized and presented findings with two posters and a final report for my graduate student mentor’s research paper now published in Nature BME*Vascular networks are critical to the survival of engineered tissue. Without vasculature, the tissue quickly becomes deprived of oxygen and nutrients. Recently, the Miller lab has developed a new, low cost open-source selective laser sintering system called OpenSLS. OpenSLS has allowed us to fabricate sacrificial templates which are used to create embedded vasculature in the macroscale. SLS uses a laser to fuse together powdered materials layer by layer until a three dimensional structure is achieved. Over the past year and a half, I have worked closely with the OpenSLS system to characterize and improve the quality of the sintered structures.
