Karen Hecht, Ph.D. is a Vice President of Science at AstaReal, Inc.. She possess expertise in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, molecular cloning, western blotting and 30 more skills. She is proficient in French and Hebrew. Colleagues describe her as "Karen is a very nice and fun person to have around. As a colleague, she was always eager to help others. Although I only directly worked with her for a short time, I was very impressed by the work she did.", "Karen was a graduate student teaching assistant for my one-semester biochemistry course at the University of Pittsburgh. As a TA, Karen led recitation sessions and exam reviews, helped me write exam questions and practice problems (many of which I still use), and helped students with material in office hours. Along with her technical expertise and content knowledge, she has excellent written and verbal communication skills. Karen interacted well with students and helped frame difficult concepts in a way that they could easily grasp. Karen is very friendly and personable. She is easy to work with, often anticipating needs and going out of her way to solve problems. Karen takes feedback well. She continually strives for excellence and would be an asset to any project or program.", and "Karen is a great scientist, a creative problem solver, and a talented communicator. I have been particularly impressed by her approach to a PhD research project that required her to use a wide range of techniques that fall outside the expertise of our lab. Only someone with Karen's intelligence, independence and professionalism could have tackled so many different methods with success. I have also had the pleasure of editing some of her written work, which is always outstanding. I can highly recommend Karen for any employer that needs a smart, motivated scientist with excellent people skills."

Postdoctoral Research AssociatePacific Northwest National Laboratory Mar 2013 - Jun 2016Richland, Wa, UsThe marine diatom has great potential for application in nanotechnology, where its ordered siliceous cell wall could be used as a platform for protein expression. Bioengineering the diatom cell wall requires an in depth understanding of the pathways and factors required for targeting recombinant proteins to the cell surface. I am applying my expertise in yeast protein trafficking towards elucidating analogous mechanisms employed by the diatom, Thalassiosira pseudonana, in synthesizing its silicate cell wall and specifically targeting proteins to the cell surface. The ultimate goal of this project is to generate cost-effective, self-assembling biosensors for application in environmental monitoring, diagnostic medicine, and nanotechnology. -
Graduate Student Researcher, Ph.D.University Of Pittsburgh Aug 2006 - Feb 2013Pittsburgh, Pa, UsThe yeast vacuole is functionally analogous to the mammalian lysosome, and is best known for its function in the degradation of superfluous and damaged macromolecules. In humans, inherited mutations leading to the disruption of lysosomal function give rise to approximately 50 varieties of diseases, collectively known as lysosomal storage diseases. I used yeast as a model organism to elucidate the function of a novel vacuolar protease family member, Pff1, in order to further our understanding of vacuole and lysosome biology and dysfunction. I utilized a variety of approaches in my research including molecular, genetic, biochemical, and proteomic techniques. -
Undergraduate ResearcherUniversity Of Toronto Sep 2002 - Aug 2006Toronto, Ontario, Ca2004-2006 Dr. Charles DeberUndergraduate Thesis: Investigating the role of cation-pi interactions in membrane protein folding. The goal of this project was to define the forces governing protein interactions in the hydrophobic membrane environment.2003-2004 Dr. John GloverProject: Investigating the interaction between Hsp104 and Sup35. The goal of this project was to use yeast as a model organism to understand the mechanism by which disease-causing amyloid fibrils may be disrupted.2002-2003 Dr. Charlie BooneProject: Systematic characterization of genetic interactions in yeast. The goal of this project was to use a large scale genetic analysis in order to map out all functional interactions across the yeast genome. This information can be used to infer the function of uncharacterized genes.
